Job Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Occupational therapist to join our Stroke team of AHPs at Southport & Ormskirk NHS Trust.

As a Senior Occupational Therapist you will be based at Southport District General Hospital. This position is excellent for someone looking to join the Stroke and Early Supported discharge team at Southport.

This is a permanent position and is full-time, it will include flexible (weekend and extended days) working.

The successful post holder can expect to receive structured supervision and support, with opportunities for further training and education.


Main Duties

* To assess and treat patients within the ward or community setting.
* To assist Clinical Therapy Manager/Team Leader in service development and the provision of a quality service.
* To take responsibility for junior staff and delegate duties as necessary, providing appropriate level of support at all times.
* To meet the Therapy and Community and Continued Care Service objectives.
* To cover for absences when required within the Community and Departments of Southport & Ormskirk Hospital Trust.
* To take part in the weekend rota if applicable.
* To record and report findings appropriately following the standard procedures used by the department to maintain high levels of written/verbal communication.
* To disseminate knowledge with other disciplines and patient/carers.
* To liaise with hospital/community-based staff to ensure continuity of treatment and provision of equipment/adaptations to facilitate discharge and prevent re‑admission.
* To attend ward rounds, case conferences and goal planning meetings.
* To maintain accurate, comprehensive, and up-to-date documentation, in line with legal and Trust requirements, and communicate results to multidisciplinary groups in the form of reports and letters.
* To assist in the collection of appropriate data and statistics for the Trust.
* To identify any changes in service demand and report to senior staff.


Administrative Responsibilities

* To plan and organise work efficiently and effectively within a designated area, in agreement with the occupational therapy team leader.
* To decide priorities for own work area, balancing other patient‑related and professional demands, ensuring alignment with departmental priorities.
* To maintain accurate, comprehensive documentation and to ensure timely reporting via the Datix system.
* To comply with organisational policies, procedures, and to review and update them as appropriate.
* To carry out any other duties as deemed appropriate by the team leader.


Teaching & Training Responsibilities

* To provide professional practice education to OT students on placement and to assist in the education and development of other health professionals.
* To actively promote occupational therapy through professional practice and delegated activities.
* To ensure continued professional development including attending relevant postgraduate training and participating in in‑service training.
* To maintain an up‑to‑date Personal Development Plan and Professional Development Portfolio.
* To participate in clinical audits and support initiatives within the department/service/directorate.


Line Management/Supervisory Responsibilities

* To manage the daily running of the department in the absence of senior staff.
* To support junior staff through supervision, delegation, and performance feedback.
* To ensure compliance with research governance procedures and to undertake clinical research.
* To maintain safety by reporting equipment/furniture/building issues in line with Trust procedures.
* To contribute to the ordering and maintenance of materials, equipment, and resources for patient care.


Qualifications

* Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy.
* Current HCPC registration.
* Evidence of relevant post‑graduate courses/CPD.


Knowledge & Experience

* Substantial clinical experience at band 6, with rotations across a variety of medical and surgical areas.
* Experience in specialist fields at band 5.
* Membership or participation in a special interest group.
* Up‑to‑date knowledge of NHS issues and relevant policies/standards.


Skills & Personal Attributes

* Excellent communication skills, with MDT case conference experience.
* Ability to resolve conflicts and manage change flexibly and diplomatically.
* Strong time management, prioritisation, and self‑management skills.
* Capacity to work autonomously and within the MDT.
* Clinical reasoning ability, problem solving, and decision‑making skills.
* Experience in delegating tasks and supervising junior staff.
* Ability to reflect on practice and demonstrate personal development.
* Effective teaching and presentation skills.


Other Requirements

* Physical strength and dexterity to carry out full assessments, including standing and sitting.
* Capability to manage distressing situations and support junior staff.
* Skill in delivering sensitive information to patients, carers or relatives.
* Ability to work in a pressured environment and maintain relationships with the MDT.
* Willingness to travel as required by the post.
