Are you looking to start or develop your career in highways and streetworks? This is a fantastic opportunity to join our Network Strategy and Management team as an Assistant Streetworks Technician, supporting the safe and efficient management of Buckinghamshire’s road network. You’ll play a key role in ensuring streetworks are carried out safely, legally and to a high standard, helping keep our county moving.

Whether you're early in your career or looking for progression, this career grade role provides clear development pathways supported by training, guidance and hands‑on experience.

We currently have two positions available:

1. x1 Assistant Streetworks Technician in Aylesbury
2. x1 Assistant Streetworks Technician in Amersham

About us

Buckinghamshire Council is a relatively new organisation that combines the strengths and expertise of the previous five councils in the county to create positive change for local people, communities, and businesses. We are firmly focused on the future and have made a clear commitment to serve residents better and to provide stronger representation for Buckinghamshire, both locally and nationally.

Highways and Technical Services play a vital role in supporting our communities, keeping the county moving and ensuring our transport network is safe, resilient and well‑managed. We’re ambitious, collaborative and committed to continuous improvement. Our Streetworks team works closely with utilities, contractors and internal partners to ensure that all highway activities comply with the New Roads and Streetworks Act 1991 and the Traffic Management Act 2004.

You’ll be part of a supportive environment that values expertise, encourages learning, and promotes forward‑thinking approaches to managing our highways. As part of our ambition to deliver the very best highways service for Buckinghamshire, we have recently reshaped our service, creating a stronger, more resilient and forward‑looking structure. This transformation reflects both local priorities and significant national developments in the sector. With new initiatives emerging—including the introduction of Lane Rental and wider changes to streetworks and network management—we are now investing in a range of new and exciting roles that will help us meet the needs of our communities today and into the future. These posts offer a genuine opportunity to shape how we manage and improve our network, drive innovation, and ensure we continue to deliver a high‑quality, safe and efficient highway network.

About the role

As an Assistant Streetworks Technician, you’ll support the delivery of inspections and monitoring activities across Buckinghamshire’s highway network. Working outdoors in all weather conditions, you will help ensure that streetworks are carried out safely, efficiently and to the correct standards.

Key Responsibilities

3. Plan and organise your workload to support the delivery of inspections across the county.
4. Carry out sample, routine and core inspections in line with legislation and service priorities.
5. Identify and report defects or issues of non-compliance, ensuring safety for all road users.
6. Collect, input and analyse data using appropriate systems and produce reports as required.
7. Support Streetworks Technicians and the wider team in delivering service improvements.
8. Provide clear, professional advice to colleagues, customers and contractors, escalating issues when necessary.
9. Note and report any wider highways defects while out on the network.
10. Promote and maintain a safe working environment at all times.

About you

We’re looking for a confident and proactive starter that wants to grow with our service and develop their career in Streetworks and the wider Highways service. A quick learner with a keen eye for assisting our teams improving the lives of Buckinghamshire residents.

You should have the ability to work collaboratively, have a keen ethic for learning new skills and working as a team to manage issues with full training on the ground. As well as represent the service with credibility. If you’re motivated, solutions‑focused, and ready to make a tangible difference to Buckinghamshire’s highway network, and are keen for a new challenge or just starting out in your career then we would love to hear from you.
