Main duties of the job
The post-holder wouldoccupy the only middle-grade training post in the department of Oral andMaxillofacial Surgery at Rotherham General Hospital, which has an excellentreputation for providing surgical training.It would offer a fantastic opportunity for a junior trainee tosignificantly increase their surgical experience in all aspects of Oral andMaxillofacial Surgery in a supportive environment.
The post requires theoccupant to provide non-resident on call services as part of the OMFS middlegrade on call rota, covering the OMFS units at Rotherham General Hospital andSheffield Teaching Hospitals. The oncall frequency is 1 in 5 weekdays, and 1 in 7 weekends. The on call commitment would be fullysupported by the OMFS Consultants at both sites.

Job responsibilities
The provision of Oral andMaxillofacial Surgery services for the Rotherham, Doncaster and Worksop area isdelivered from the OMFS departments at Rotherham General Hospital andMexborough Montagu Hospital, Doncaster. All acute operating and elective majoroperating takes place at Rotherham General Hospital. Day surgery services,outpatient Minor Oral Surgery operating, and outpatient clinics are deliveredon both sites.
TheMaxillofacial Surgery Unit at Rotherham General Hospital treats the fullspectrum of OMFS diagnoses. The department treats a large volume ofmaxillofacial trauma, and in addition to the routine management of trauma, theconsultants in the department are experienced in the use of up-to-datetechniques such as orbital reconstruction using custom-made orbital implants,and the management of fractures of the mandibular condyle with endoscopicallyassisted fixation. Approximately 350 emergency cases are operated on in thedepartment every year.
Specialinterests within the department are head and neck cancer surgery, salivarygland surgery (including the management of salivary gland calculi usingsialoendoscopy), orthognathic surgery, the surgical management of skin cancersof the head and neck, TMJ surgery and implant surgery.
Patients withhead and neck mucosal malignancy are diagnosed in the departments at Rotherhamand Mexborough. Minor Head and Neckcancer surgery is carried out at Rotherham, with all major Head and Neck cancersurgery operating carried out at the Head and Neck Cancer surgical centre atthe Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. The Junior Clinical Fellow may have the opportunity to attend Head and Neck operating sessions atthe Royal Hallamshire Hospital along with Mr Patterson, depending ontimetabling and departmental requirements.
The post is afixed-term replacement post for the vacant Specialty Registrar position in thedepartment, due to a vacancy in the training rotation.

Thepost-holder would be required to provide support for the eight Dental CoreTrainees in the department, as well as supporting the consultants and othermembers of the department.
Thepost-holder would occupy the only senior training post in the department, andthe timetable would be heavily weighted to supporting the Consultant operatinglists in theatre. The post wouldtherefore deliver a large amount of surgical exposure, and it would be expectedthat the post-holder would be able to significantly increase their experiencein all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The post-holder would receive surgicaltraining appropriate to their level of experience.
The post requires the occupant toprovide non-resident on call services, as part of the OMFS middle grade on callrota, providing in-patient and emergency cover for the units at RotherhamGeneral Hospital and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. The on call shifts are shared with the threeSpecialty Registrars at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the Registrar atChesterfield Royal Hospital, as well as two Clinical Fellows who provideweekend cover.
The on call frequency is 1 in 5weekdays, and 1 in 7 weekends.
Thepost-holder is required to be have a full driving licence and to be able totravel between sites when on call.
The on call commitment would befully supported by the OMFS Consultants on call at both sites. The post-holder would not be expected tooperate at a level about that of a day one Specialty Registrar.
