Summary of the role
The University of Exeter wishes to recruit a full-time BSU Manager / Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO) to work within the University’s Biological Research Facilities in Technical Services. This position is available immediately on a permanent basis on the Streatham Campus.
A key member of the BSU team, the post holder will support the daily management of one or more of the University’s BSU facilities within the Biological Research Facilities (BRF) team. Responsibilities include managing the facility(s), maintaining animal husbandry, supporting research project operations, and overseeing facility operations. The role involves operational management, training delivery, health and safety, facility maintenance, biosecurity, and security. Building effective relationships with technical staff, stakeholders, and suppliers is essential to maintain operations and a culture of care.
The candidate should have knowledge of rodent housing systems, equipment, BSU infrastructure, and biosecurity. They must be competent in PIL operations to support research activities, including conducting competency assessments of PIL Holders and Animal Technicians with the NTCO.
As the Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO), the role includes ensuring compliance with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and maintaining high standards of animal welfare in accordance with Home Office license conditions and University policies.
The role requires proactive commitment to personal and professional development. Mentorship and training opportunities are available through the Technical Services team and the Staff Learning and Development team.
