Overview
The Design Manager reports to the Programme Engineering Manager for design development aspects and plays a key role throughout the project lifecycle. They will ensure the successful delivery of the design aspects for a capital infrastructure programme and provide direction and support to lead, manage and deliver design scopes for their domain. This role works closely with the Design Project Manager and Lead Engineers, requires delivering at pace with sound engineering judgement, management skills, tools and techniques. The role manages delivery and coordinates technical engineering work packages to meet scope, quality, schedule and cost, and plans for and supports integration with internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
* Managing a team of multi-disciplinary engineers.
* Leading working groups, meetings and reviews with consultants and contractors.
* Leading delivery of technical packages of work.
* Managing design changes and concessions.
* Reviewing and managing Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) schedules, operating procedures and results to satisfy design requirements and safety case through life.
* Providing periodic reviews of safety reports.
* Advising and directing internal and external stakeholders.
* Co-ordinating Independent Technical Review (ITA) and Independent Peer Review (IPR) processes with Authorising Authorities.
* Applying general and specialist engineering knowledge to apply existing and emerging technology.
* Applying theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and recycle engineering processes, systems, services and products in a nuclear/high risk environment.
* Producing robust technical justification to support relevant civil/structural design modifications to be authorised within a high hazard industry.
* Reviewing technical reports and other safety case submissions from external contractors.
* Checking and reviewing calculations and technical documents written by other staff.
* Producing and improving technical processes.
Qualifications
Essential
* SC security clearance, or the ability to obtain in advance of employment.
* An accredited degree in an appropriate STEM discipline.
* Extensive experience and demonstrated knowledge in the technical management of large-scale and complex design development across the design lifecycle.
* Strong understanding of engineering design and safety practices as relevant to the discipline, role and project requirements.
* Strong experience in BIM environments.
* Sound project specification, planning, project management and budgeting experience.
* Understanding of procedures related to Design, Health & Safety and Quality requirements.
* Working knowledge of relevant engineering office computer applications.
Desirable
* Chartered membership of a relevant engineering professional body.
* Experience working on a nuclear licensed site or a similar high-risk environment.
* Familiarity with safety case development techniques such as HAZID/HAZOP studies.
* Experience in the UK nuclear industry (energy or defence), particularly in the design and assessment of safety-related structures, systems and components.
* Knowledge of UK and US nuclear industry regulation and practice, and application of relevant nuclear-specific codes and standards.
