Chief Objective of Position
The Microsoft 365 Engineer is responsible for the implementation, administration, optimization, and secure operation of Christopher Newport University’s Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 environments. This position supports the University’s cloud strategy by ensuring reliable, secure, and efficient delivery of identity, collaboration, and cloud-based services. The role works closely with IT teams and the Information Security Office to integrate cloud services with on‑premises infrastructure, enforce best practices, and continuously improve the University’s technology environment. This is an internal posting open to current employees of Christopher Newport University.
Work Tasks
* Configure, deploy, and maintain Microsoft 365 solutions, including identity, security, endpoint management, and collaboration services, that align with CNU’s strategic goals.
* Configure and manage Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) services, including Conditional Access, hybrid identity, and role-based access control (RBAC).
* Support the planning and execution of migrations to Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, and Microsoft Teams, and transition to ongoing administration and support.
* Configure and maintain Windows clients using MDM technologies like Microsoft Intune and Windows Autopilot.
* Manage user and group lifecycle processes, including provisioning, de‑provisioning, and access management for students, faculty, and staff.
* Collaborate with the Information Security Office to implement cloud security controls, respond to audit findings, and ensure compliance with university and regulatory standards.
* Administer Microsoft 365 licensing, including assignment, tracking, and optimization to ensure cost-effectiveness and compliance.
* Monitor system performance, service health, and security alerts within Azure and Microsoft 365 environments, taking proactive steps to resolve issues.
* Serve as a Tier 3 escalation point for complex Microsoft 365 and Azure-related issues.
* Develop and maintain documentation for system configurations, processes, and support procedures.
* Collaborate with Networking, Security, and Endpoint Management teams to ensure a cohesive, secure, and well-integrated technology environment.
* Provide guidance and training to faculty, staff, and IT colleagues on the effective and secure use of Microsoft 365 services.
* Stay current with Microsoft cloud technologies and recommend improvements to enhance functionality, security, and efficiency.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) related to position
* Strong understanding of Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 services and ecosystems.
* Experience with Microsoft Entra identity services, including Conditional Access, MFA, and hybrid identity integration.
* Working knowledge of integrating cloud services with on‑premises systems (Active Directory, Microsoft Intune, DNS, networking).
* Knowledge of cloud security practices, compliance frameworks (e.g., NIST, CIS), and governance principles.
* Proficiency in scripting and automation tools such as PowerShell, Microsoft Graph, or Azure CLI.
* Experience with monitoring and troubleshooting cloud environments using Microsoft-native tools.
* Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve complex technical issues.
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
* Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
* Ability to maintain professionalism and effectiveness in a fast-paced environment.
Required Education
* Master’s Degree or a Bachelor’s degree with work experience that equates to an advanced degree.
Experience Required
* Experience in cloud or systems engineering.
* Experience supporting Microsoft 365 and/or Azure environments.
Additional Consideration – Experience
* Experience working in a hybrid environment integrating Microsoft Azure with on-premises infrastructure.
* Experience supporting or participating in cloud migration initiatives.
* Experience administering Microsoft 365 services such as Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and Teams.
* Experience collaborating with Information Security teams on audits, compliance, or incident response activities.
* Experience with identity and access management concepts, including role-based access and lifecycle management.
* One or more of the following certifications (or equivalent) is strongly preferred:
o Microsoft 365 Certified: Endpoint Administrator Associate (MD-102)

o Microsoft Certified: Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals (SC-900)
Salary Information
Starting at $80,000, commensurate with education and experience.
