Background
Campus Services (CS) employs over 900 staff with a turnover exceeding £57m in the last financial year. CS provides services across diverse areas including sporting facilities, food and beverage, cleaning, safety and security, conferencing, hotel operations, day nurseries, post, retail outlets, visitor services and attractions, student housing, transport, waste disposal and recycling. CS operates within a University context with an ambitious strategic agenda for growth on Birmingham and Dubai campuses.
Role Summary
The Live Events Technician delivers a range of event technical production services to support musical, conference, and other events at the University of Birmingham. Primary responsibilities cover the Elgar Concert Hall and the Great Hall, with technical assistance for events across the campus and Exchange venue as needed. The Technician works under the Live Events Technical Manager to ensure smooth operation of technical services, supports incoming artistes and external production teams, and may assist with rehearsals, commercial events, lectures and conferences. The postholder also supports maintenance and health and safety aspects to ensure regulatory compliance. Availability for weekends, early starts, late nights, and bank holidays is required where needed.
Main Duties
* Plan and implement the preparation, get-in, fit-up, derig, and removal of all in-house technical services including lighting, sound, staging, flying/rigging and AV/projection for each event.
* Lead setup and operation of the venues’ in-house technical systems.
* Operate technical systems as required for events (e.g., AV, projection) or mix live sound for performances.
* Provide proactive technical support to visiting production companies, other university departments, and venue users to meet needs.
* Manage the venues’ stock of audio-visual equipment, maintain stock inventories, and report issues to the Live Events Technical Manager.
* Develop long-term planning for technical systems to align with current developments and standards.
* Provide first-line maintenance of installations and equipment to ensure ongoing operability.
* Support health and safety processes within the venue to ensure compliance with current regulations.
* Configure and set up Elgar Concert Hall for each user.
* Support daily operations and non-technical tasks as required, including setup of furniture and signage.
* Address day-to-day customer needs to ensure positive outcomes and deliver excellent service.
* Support other technical equipment and Campus Services commitments as needed.
* Other duties as assigned by line manager or Director of Campus Services.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
* Working knowledge of technical production systems and equipment (sound, lighting, staging, rigging, AV, projection).
* Experience with live event AV systems, signal switching, streaming, HD projection, and software such as PowerPoint, Keynote, or Slido.
* Knowledge of Yamaha digital audio mixing consoles with Dante, Avolites lighting consoles, and D&B Audiotechnik PA systems.
* Flexible approach to shows, get-ins/get-outs, and improving venue systems.
* Working knowledge of event health and safety practices.
* Effective communication with clients and colleagues; ability to supervise casual staff and volunteers.
* Experience in the live events industry; PAT testing or electrical qualification and training in AV/stagecraft are desirable.
* Focus on customer service, collaboration with other teams, and problem-solving skills.
* Technical production qualifications are desirable but not essential.
* Strong attention to detail and ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
* Ability to understand university policies and procedures.
