About This Role
An opportunity has arisen at Harrow for a Post Graduate Assistant Teacher (PGAT) of PE from September 2025.
The Post Comes With a Generous Package, Including
* Rent-free accommodation provided on the Hill;
* Health cover provided free of charge for you and at a reduced rate for any members of your immediate family that you may wish to add;
* All meals are provided free of charge during term time.
PGAT appointments are fixed term contracts and are typically for one academic year, with the possibility of the contract being renewed for a second year. PGATs teach a reduced timetable, typically including no more than 20 timetabled lessons of 40 minute duration per week, and assist in departments more generally in ways appropriate to their experience and ability. The School provides training in skills both related to teaching and transferable to other professions. The role of PGAT will allow those interested in pursuing a career in teaching to gain directly relevant experience and training, and those more likely to move into another profession beyond the end of their time at Harrow to acquire skills beneficial for their future careers in other areas, including banking, consultancy and the law.
At Harrow, we make sport fun for our boys and encourage their active and enthusiastic participation, at the same time producing highly motivated sportsmen who are good role models. As a consequence, sport is thriving at the School and we have an international reputation as a centre of sporting excellence. Many Harrovians go on to enjoy professional careers in sport.
Physical Education and Sport are integral to life at the School, and we take pride in fostering a culture where physical activity, health, and performance are highly valued. All Shell boys follow a timetabled Physical Education programme that complements the School’s extensive games provision, giving the boys a strong foundation in fundamental movement patterns and key psychological characteristics. Our academic provision is equally vibrant: boys can opt to study Physical Education at GCSE and Sports Science at A Level both of which are thriving, with consistently strong uptake and growing interest. These courses inspire the boys to engage deeply with the scientific and theoretical principles behind performance, equipping them with knowledge and skills that extend far beyond the sports field.
The School’s Sports Science Society brings in notable sports people and professionals from across the sporting world to speak at Harrow. The focus is on understanding sporting success as a product of teamwork, on and off the field, and the Society, which is entirely boy-led, is extremely well attended. In addition, a wide range of sport-related Electives are offered within the Super Curriculum, allowing boys to explore areas such as sports psychology, nutrition, and performance analysis in greater depth.
In the Physical Education department, the PGAT will support the delivery of both GCSE and A Level PE. This includes teaching divisions, preparing teaching materials, marking and assessment, supporting boys with coursework and practical elements, and helping to develop and deliver extension opportunities for boys interested in sport science, anatomy and physiology, or related disciplines. There is also the opportunity to contribute to the academic enrichment programme through subject societies, lectures, or one-to-one academic mentoring. PGATs are expected to coach sports and manage activities in each of the three terms.
Please note that applications will be considered as they are received. The School reserves the right to appoint at any time in the process.
Equality, diversity and inclusion are values that are important to us at Harrow. We believe in diversity of thought and actively welcome everyone regardless of their background to bring their valuable and relevant skills to our community.
The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All successful applicants must be willing to undergo enhanced child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with any past employer and the Disclosure and Barring Service. It is an offence to apply for the role if the applicant is barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children.
