Job Summary
Junior Sister/Charge Nurse Beech B role at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust – permanent Band 6. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a registered nurse to join the general surgery division on Beech B, assisting the ward manager in the smooth running of the unit with team management responsibilities and leadership to move the unit forward. Sound decision making and acute clinical expertise are essential, as well as the ability to bring out the best in team members.
Training and development requirements including enhanced care will be identified at appointment and appropriate training will be tailored to meet the needs of the individual with support from the ward manager and matron.
Main duties of the job
* Support ward manager and staff with professional accountability and standards, ensuring clinical practices align with the NMC code, Trust values, procedures and policies.
* Ensure the provision of safe and effective patient care.
* Support the team to maintain environmental standards of cleanliness in line with national and Trust standards.
* In the absence of the ward manager, ensure smooth functioning of the department.
* Support the development of junior staff and students, ensuring appropriate supervision and assessment.
* Develop, lead and manage a patient-centred nursing service delivered by professional staff to the highest standards of care.
* Deputise for the Departmental Manager in their absence.
* Contribute to the strategic and operational development of the Unit.
* Support recruitment and selection of nursing staff and sickness management.
* Implement the Trust values in daily practice.

Job Description and Responsibilities
* Work according to the NMC Code and guidelines including the 6 Cs as a named nurse and key worker for a defined group of patients; assess care and health education needs; develop, implement and evaluate care programmes including discharge planning; demonstrate expertise in clinical practice, facilitation, teaching and management.
* Ensure effective communication with patients, relatives, carers and the multidisciplinary team.
* Act as a role model and support new and less experienced staff, students and agency staff; participate in preceptorship and student development.
* Develop, lead and manage a patient-centered nursing service delivering high standards of care.
* Deputise for the Departmental Manager in their absence and contribute to the Unit’s strategic and operational development.
* Support recruitment, selection and sickness management; promote Trust values in daily practice.
Professional Development and Education Responsibilities
* Develop and maintain own teaching skills; participate in staff and student education; attend Trust and local orientation and mandatory training.
* Maintain knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness in line with PREP requirements; maintain a professional portfolio with reflective practice.
* Contribute to annual appraisal and Personal Development Programme; support departmental managers in staff appraisals and PDR processes.
* Develop nursing practice guidelines, standards and policies; provide training and development of junior staff and students to ensure high standards of care.
* Organise and provide training programmes and annual training plans with the Departmental Manager.
Professional and Clinical Leadership Responsibilities
* Deputise for the Departmental Manager; liaise with the multidisciplinary team and external stakeholders to ensure effective and efficient care.
* Lead and coordinate the Department in the absence of the Departmental Manager; disseminate information to staff; act as ambassador for the organisation and nursing profession.
* Maintain NMC registration and ensure adherence to the code; promote Health Education within the clinical area.
* Maintain high standards of care and drive change in collaboration with the Departmental Manager.
* Prepare duty rota to ensure adequate staffing within budget; monitor equipment use and supplies; manage department budget.
* Inform and discuss nursing issues with the Departmental Manager; support Endoscopy Service development and scheduling changes as required; participate in workforce development, selection and interviewing of nursing staff; devise induction for new staff.
* Maintain drug custody and administration in line with Trust policy; facilitate staff meetings and orientate new staff; assist in investigations of complaints and draft responses as required.
* Order stock and consumables; attend meetings in the Department Manager’s absence.
Research, Audit, Quality and Risk Management
* Promote evidence-based nursing; maintain awareness of quality issues relevant to nursing care; participate in clinical governance and audit processes; contribute to safety and infection control measures; ensure risk assessments are completed within 24 hours of admission.
Resource Management
* Develop budgeting awareness; assist in staffing assessments; undertake clinical/shift management in the Department Manager’s absence; ensure delivery of local services with high-quality, reliable and integrated care.
