Consultant Ophthalmologist (Glaucoma)

We are seeking to appoint a full‑time Consultant Ophthalmologist (Glaucoma) to deliver high‑quality glaucoma care. The job plan comprises 8.5 programmed activities for direct clinical care (including associated administrative duties) and 1.5 sessions of supporting professional activity (SPA).

The Glaucoma service manages a substantial caseload each year, with over 6,000 outpatient appointments, around 3,500 asynchronous reviews, and more than 350 glaucoma and cataract surgical procedures. Patients with mild to moderate disease are supported through a well‑established community service, ensuring hospital capacity is focused on those with more complex needs.

Main duties of the job

The post‑holder will have substantial surgical expertise in glaucoma and cataract surgery, including filtration procedures, glaucoma drainage device implantation, and revision surgery, reflecting the scope of theatre sessions for this role. In addition to subspecialty expertise in glaucoma management, the post‑holder will have broad experience in general ophthalmology outpatient care and will contribute to all stages of the ophthalmology patient pathway, including through a programmed Eye Casualty session.

The post‑holder will be expected to contribute actively to the education, training, and supervision of medical, nursing, and allied health professional staff within the department. This includes direct clinical supervision of ophthalmology trainees in outpatient clinics, operating theatres, and laser sessions, ensuring that patient care and trainee development are maintained to the highest standards.
