Utah State University students are invited to apply for summer internship opportunities with the. Forest Service at the Ferron Ranger District. Two internship roles are available: Range Aid and Biological Aid.
Range Aid Job Description:
This job will be supporting the range and ecological resource areas in the monitoring of vegetation and soils conditions on the Manti-La Sal National Forest. This job would also support in up keep of rangeland improvements on the forest as well.
Biological Aid Job Description:
This job will be supporting the Wildlife Staff in the monitoring of Northern Goshawk, Sage Grouse and vegetation on the Manti-La Sal National Forest. This job would also support other forest disciplines with improvements on the forest as well.
Responsibilities
As a Range Aid, duties may include the following:
1. Monitoring of shrubs and herbaceous vegetation.
2. Driving 4x4 trucks and ATV's in adverse conditions.
3. Monitoring effects of livestock grazing.
4. Using GPS equipment to log weed locations.
5. Weed removal using chemical and hand tools using backpack weed sprayers.
6. Obtain a pesticide applicator permit.
7. Building fence, fixing water troughs and pipelines.
8. Recording data onto paper forms and hand held devices.
9. Reading maps and orienteering to find remote job sites.
10. Follow instructions with little or no oversight.
11. Communicate frequently with supervisors to keep them informed.
12. Keep safety in mind on all tasks.
As a Biological Aid, duties may include the following:
13. Monitoring of shrubs and herbaceous vegetation.
14. Northern Goshawk Monitoring/ Surveys
15. Sage Grouse Summer Brood Rearing Surveys
16. Boreal Toad Spring Improvement project
17. Special Needs Fishing Day
18. Using GPS equipment to find known goshawk nests locations.
19. Building fence, fixing water troughs and pipelines.
20. Recording data onto paper forms and hand held devices.
21. Reading maps and orienteering to find remote job sites.
22. Follow instructions with little or no oversight.
23. Communicate frequently with supervisors to keep them informed.
24. Keep safety in mind on all tasks.
Qualifications
Must be enrolled at USU and be 18 years of age.

Advertised Salary
$13 - $15 hourly

This position requires considerable physical effort. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including lifting up to 50 pounds, hike long distances (10-12 miles daily) while carrying heavy packs over rugged, steep terrain with downfall logs, and standing for extended periods. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment. Employees work outside and will not be protected from weather conditions, including extreme cold and extreme heat for extended periods.
