Repair & Maintenance Unit Leader
Ensure the local community has access to a healthy, stable water supply by carrying out emergency repairs and assisting with the deployment of emergency water supply equipment.
This is a full‑time, field‑based role covering the operating areas of Bristol Water. Due to the nature of emergency repairs, the successful candidate will be part of a standby rota to cover emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Responsibilities
* Carry out repair work on strategic mains systems in the event of operational failure.
* Conduct excavation and temporary works to locate and repair leaks; install new apparatus and conduct street works, traffic management, backfilling, and reinstatement.
* Act as on‑site leader and ensure all works are carried out to specification and standards.
* Be accountable for ordering the correct materials (stone, concrete) and equipment (barriers, diggers, slews) to minimise duration and cost.
* Carry out pre‑site surveys and report back information required to the Construction Manager.
* Liaise with Highways Officials, contractors, external stakeholders and landowners.
* Prepare openings in public highways or on private land, or work with the contract excavator dryer to prepare for work on main pipes and fittings.
* Construct trench support systems as required and carry out chlorination of pipes and fittings.
* Operate all construction plans and equipment and highlight any defective equipment to the Construction Manager.
* Prioritise health and safety on call jobs and advise team members and site visitors on safety issues.
* Drive and operate LGV Class C and C+E vehicles.
* Be part of a 24‑hour, 365‑day standby rota to provide emergency cover.
Qualifications
Desirable qualifications and experience (full training will be provided). Not essential.
* Previous utility experience in excavation, backfill, reinstatement, and repair and maintenance of large‑diameter mains.
* Full UK driving licence (Category C and C+E).
* SHOC Cat & Genny trained.
* National Water Hygiene (EUSR registration).
* NRSWA StreetWorks (Units 1–9).
* CPCS – Plant Operations (Blue Card).
* COSHH training.
* Abrasive wheels certification.
* Trained in kinetic manual handling techniques.
* Ability to demonstrate compliance with kinetic manual handling requirements.
