Description Position Details School of Government Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK Full time starting salary is normally in the range £36,636 to £46,049 with potential progression once in post to £48,822 Grade: 7 Full Time, Fixed Term contract up to February 2029 Closing date: 21 st April 2026 Background “Resisting Interscalar Authoritarian Networks and Coalitions” (RESISTANCE) is a newly funded Horizon Europe project (Horizon call HORIZON-CL2-2025-01-DEMOCRACY-07) that brings together 13 partner organisations to develop a novel Interscalar Framework which integrates political science and human geography to explain how authoritarian ideas, institutions, technologies, and policies spread through the interaction of local, national, and transnational actors. The project leads at the University of Birmingham are hiring a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the project team and help deliver the project. Please note that the project is currently in Grant Agreement Preparation (GAP) with the European Commission and this position is conditional on the Grant Agreement being signed and entering into force. More on RESISTANCE We are in an era of authoritarian momentum and democratic retreat. Even in long-established liberal democracies, including in Europe, the rise of autocratic appeal is no longer a looming threat; it is a lived reality. Scholars have responded by developing a rich stream of work on autocratisation, democratic backsliding, and democratic resilience. Democratic policymakers, civil society organisations (CSOs), journalists and donors are also investing significant resources in understanding how to resist authoritarian advance. Several RESISTANCE partners have worked at the frontlines of this effort. Yet, we lack a full appreciation of the contemporary authoritarian challenge and how to address it. For this to happen we need a new understanding of the contemporary authoritarian moment. Authoritarianism is not something that each country experiences and addresses on its own: borrowing from human and urban geography, we suggest a new understanding of authoritarianism as a fundamentally interscalar phenomenon. That is, authoritarian ideas, institutions, technologies, and policies are shaped and spread through the interaction and mutual influence of local, national, and transnational actors. These interscalar interactions shape authoritarian and resistance ecosystems that are themselves nested within multiple interdependent layers of action. This has profound implications for how we understand and confront the challenge of contemporary authoritarianism. The ambition of the Resisting InterScalar Authoritarian Networks and Coalitions (RESISTANCE) project is to map autocratic appeal and democratic resistance coalitions, explain how they emerge and function within broader authoritarian and resistance ecosystems, and ultimately provide new tools to resist what we call “Interscalar Authoritarianism”. The project is structured along 10 Work Packages that together deliver the core objectives to theorise, map, and explain how autocratic appeal coalitions and democratic resistance coalitions are constituted across scales (local, national, transnational), and how they work and interact in practice to shape the contemporary authoritarian challenge in diverse contexts, and co-produce and disseminate new tools to resist authoritarianism. The project is led by Licia Cianetti and Nic Cheeseman, and it builds on their work at the University of Birmingham’s Centre for Elections Democracy Accountability and Representation (CEDAR).
