Our school nurses work with children aged 5 to 19 in over 400 mainstream schools across Birmingham every day. As well as the 'core' school nurse team funded by local commissioners, our Traded Services dedicated team provides an unrestricted range of school nursing services purchased directly by schools specifically to meet local school health needs.

Growing demand for this popular programme means we want to recruit dynamic, enthusiastic and highly motivated registered nurses to join our expanding school nursing traded services dedicated team. You will work with a group of named schools as a trusted clinical member of their extended professional team, supporting children and young people, and schools' wider communities, to achieve their full potential. Attending your schools regularly to an agreed schedule you will provide school nursing services tailored upon agreed needs and outcomes in each case.

Main duties of the job

To successfully apply for this term-time only Band 6 post the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse degree in School Nursing is an essential requirement. You will also demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively with colleagues, clients and our school customers. You will understand the current guidance and public health outcomes within school nursing, safeguarding, and also possess knowledge of the health needs of the children and communities in which they will work. To make effective use of our mobile working technology and IT systems you will also have good IT skills.

We deliver a wide range of services for children, young people, parents and families as well as adults and community services, two community hospitals, services for people with learning disabilities, the internationally recognised West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre and one of Europe's leading Dental Hospitals and School of Dentistry.

BCHC's Children & Families Division brings together all the specialist community services for children and young people across Birmingham and offers a coordinated approachto child health care. It also delivers the universal children's services of health visiting, mainstream school nursing and the paediatric eye screening service for the South Birmingham population.


Job responsibilities

Main Duties

The post holder will be working as part of the Traded Services School Nursing Team, providing services purchased directly by schools and other settings and which are additional to the core services commissioned under local public health commissioning

To maintain the Code of Professional Conduct as laid down by the NMC and be responsible for the recording and re-registration of all nursing qualifications.

To plan and carry out health education programmes for schools within the caseload and to advise teaching staff about health education programmes relevant to the needs of school aged children, within the remit of the traded services programme.

To identify and monitor children giving cause for concern or considered to be at risk of abuse and to take the appropriate action as identified in the local child protection procedures. To advise and support members of the team appropriately

To undertake the development of and participate in school health profiles and utilise available demographic data to identify health trends in order to plan effective services to meet the needs of the individual and school population.

To be a liaison agent between the children, teachers, parents, medical officers, the appropriate primary health care teams and others.

When necessary or as agreed with individual schools, to promote and monitor health in school aged children, including identifying ill health, developmental concerns and behaviour problems and plan care to meet the needs of individual pupils in liaison with and supplementing core service colleagues.

To carry out home visits as required.

To work in settings other than schools as necessary to meet the needs of children and their families.

To plan and undertake, with team members and teaching staff, the work to be carried out in schools and to establish good staff relationships and communication networks.

To maintain accurate records and prepare reports as necessary, ensuring their confidentiality and to offer support to other members of the team in doing so.

To ensure activity records are completed for sign off by school representatives at the end of each visit and promptly submitted to the Traded services office.

To participate in case conferences, case reviews and core groups where appropriate.

To write court reports as required in conjunction with legal services.

To undertake cover for colleagues as designated by the Team Leader.

To participate in trust clinical governance and audit programmes.

To ensure all new members of staff undertake induction programme.

To be able to use software packages appropriate to clinical care and to ensure data is entered onto the system in a timely and accurate manner.

To facilitate the planning and implementation of drop in sessions increasing the access of health services to pupils.


Person Specification


Qualifications/Training

* SLAiP/ENB 998/city & guilds 730/similar teaching qualification


Experience

* Significant post registration experience working with children and young people.
* Team Working


Skills/Knowledge

* Knowledge and application of NMC code of professional conduct
* Ability to demonstrate sound knowledge and application of up to date evidence based clinical practices
* Knowledge of leadership style and when to use appropriately
* Ability to teach and assess pre and post registration students
* Ability to manage caseload
* Knowledge of current issues pertinent to school health and health education.
* Ability to teach relatives, clients and staff across all areas of self-care and health promotion.
* Ability to work in a supervisory capacity
* Knowledge of current legislative changes affecting the NHS and social services, particularly those affecting primary care and young people.
* Ability to participate in setting standards and auditing.
* Ability to produce relevant, concise, accurate and legible written communication.
* Ability to demonstrate individual responsibility in respect of health and safety.
* Awareness of the needs of ethnic minority clients/care (e.g. equal opportunities)

* Ability to demonstrate a commitment to team working
* Ability to manage change within a NHS/Primary Care arena.
* Ability to learn and apply knowledge appropriately
* Ability to motivate, teach and support students/staff within the service.

£38,682 to £46,580 a yearper annum, pro rata
