The University of Bristol’s School of Arts is recruiting a Senior Research Associate in Philosophy of Language/Linguistics for a fixed‑term research position. This role forms part of an ERC-funded project, Expressing Value in Language (EVIL), led by a principal investigator, and involves working within an interdisciplinary team to advance research at the intersection of philosophy of language and linguistics. The work spans theoretical and empirical aspects of evaluative adjectives and their implications for broader debates within metaethics and linguistic theory. The successful candidate will contribute to project development, engage collaboratively with team members including postdoctoral researchers and research students, and support the delivery of high‑quality research outputs in line with the project’s aims (investigating evaluative terms such as “good”, “bad”, and related phenomena). The position is full‑time and funded for three years under GradeJ terms.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must hold a PhD in Philosophy, Linguistics, or a closely related discipline at the time of appointment (or have submitted with confirmation pending). Applicants should demonstrate the ability to conduct independent research and contribute meaningfully to interdisciplinary investigation within the project framework.
Required expertise/skills
Deep understanding of philosophy of language and/or linguistics with a strong research profile relevant to evaluative expressions and related theoretical issues.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an academic research environment.
Capacity to integrate theoretical insights with empirically‑informed linguistic approaches where applicable.
Proven academic writing and communication skills appropriate for publication and dissemination of research findings.
Salary details
Salary for this position is in the range of £43,482 to £48,822 per annum, GradeJ, reflective of experience and role requirements.
