Overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic Consultant in Anaesthetics to join The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. The successful candidate will provide high‑quality clinical care, contribute to service development, and educate and train resident staff.
Our department delivers consultant‑led services to dynamic surgical teams, explores surgical innovation, and welcomes specialists across a wide mix of interests, including Royal College examiner roles, quality improvement, medical examiner duties, mortality reviews, clinical risk, project management, ethics and management roles. Recent expansion includes anaesthetic support for procedures outside theatres, endoscopy, interventional radiology, a Vanguard Ophthalmology theatre, elective obstetrics and obstetric clinics, and a consultant‑led high‑risk anaesthetic clinic service.
Responsibilities
* Provide expert clinical care in Anaesthetics, including elective theatre lists, emergencies, outpatient and high‑risk anaesthetic clinics, and on‑call services.
* Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions in hospital and community settings.
* Contribute to the development and implementation of integrated clinical guidelines and protocols.
* Supervise and support resident medical staff.
* Engage in clinical audit, quality improvement and research activities.
* Participate in clinical governance and risk management.
* Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
* Collaborate with colleagues across departments and external partners.
* Support or lead research within the department and contribute to publications and presentations at professional conferences.
* Take on leadership roles as appropriate within the department or Trust.
Teaching and Training
* Provide teaching and mentorship to medical students, resident doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.
* Participate in postgraduate education and training programmes.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* GMC registration with a licence to practise.
* FRCA or equivalent.
* CCT (or equivalent) in relevant specialty or within six months of achieving.
* Subspecialty training in Paediatric Anaesthesia.
* Higher degree (e.g., MD, PhD) or additional postgraduate qualifications ideally in Perioperative medicine or equivalent.
* Formal teaching qualification (e.g., PGCert in Medical Education).
Experience
* Broad and relevant clinical experience in the specialty.
* Experience teaching and supervising resident doctors and medical students.
* Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement.
* Experience in High‑Risk Anaesthetic Clinic for Paediatrics.
* Completion of an SIA or equivalent in peri‑operative medicine.
* Experience in service development or redesign.
* Advanced training in anaesthesia for Obstetrics and Regional Anaesthesia.
* ALS or EPALS Instructor.
* Experience in curriculum development or educational leadership.
* Publications in peer‑reviewed journals; involvement in clinical research or trials.
* Previous experience working in the NHS or similar healthcare system.
