Overview
Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) seeks Head of Media and PR. You will be a master of effective public engagement communications and storytelling, and a key member of our Marketing and Communications Team. Lead on the implementation of our Media and Public Relations strategy and ensure its effective delivery and ongoing integration into our wider MarComms strategy, Income Generation, Marketing and Communications Directorate (IGMC) and wider organisational strategy. Our directorate’s overall goal is to generate and inspire support to save lives across Kent, Surrey and Sussex now and in the future.
We are driven by our purpose of saving lives and ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients. Last year we responded to over 3,100 incidents. Our headquarters and forward operating base are located at Rochester Airport, with our aircraft hangar maintained at Redhill Aerodrome, allowing us to reach any part of Kent, Surrey or Sussex in under 30 minutes when called.
Main Responsibilities
* Lead delivery and continual development of our Media and Public Relations strategy as part of the Marketing and Communications Team within the Income Generation and Marketing and Communications directorate.
* Lead our in‑house press office; deliver local, national and sector broadcast, digital and print media coverage; creating and seizing proactive and reactive media opportunities.
* Deliver large‑scale media events and training; advance our approach to TV and radio productions, podcasts and other digital opportunities.
* Lead the development of PR content including lived experience stories.
* Support the Director of Communications and Engagement in crisis communications readiness and implementation.
* Lead the development and delivery of our patronage and ambassador programme to engage VIPs, celebrities and influential stakeholders, with a proven track record in working with these groups.
* Lead our public affairs strategy with Government, MPs and community leaders to advance our lifesaving service and advocate policy development and/or change.
* Contribute to integrated campaigns and support income generation through effective messaging and media/PR activities for campaigns and appeals.
* Work with colleagues to ensure consistent brand identity, key messaging, and tone across channels; provide training and coaching as needed.
* Craft compelling storytelling, copywriting, content creation and event management.
* Collaborate with the Digital Team to ensure integrated on/offline activity and maximize reach and impact.
* Develop relationships across Team KSS, including senior leaders, to provide strategic and tactical communications support.
* Maintain confidentiality on sensitive matters including medical information, press enquiries and former patient stories.
* Write and deliver strategic documents in partnership with the Governance Team and Senior Leadership Team.
* Manage KSS reputation, escalate risks to the Director of Communications and Engagement, and work with the IGMC Team.
* Evaluate PR performance using data‑driven evidence and continuously improve impact.
* Support a culture that embeds and promotes our values.
* Attendance at fundraising events may be required, including weekend work; time off in lieu provided for additional hours.
Other duties
General duties as needed to support the team and contribute to the functioning and morale of the charity; the role profile will be reviewed and updated as necessary.
