Consultant for Adult Inherited Metabolic Disorders

This job description covers the main points of the post only. The neurology department hosts a series of specialised services, and the composition of the post will depend on the roles required for the sub-specialism of the applicant.
The appointee will join a multi-disciplinary team consisting of four current Metabolic Medicine Consultants, specialist dietitians, specialist nurses, one dedicated pharmacist, one specialist physiotherapist and one research physiotherapist. The team is supported managerially by a Support Manager, Lead Manager, Senior Operational Manager and Clinical Director. The nature of the work includes assessment and a range of clinical treatments and consultancy covering the whole spectrum of inherited metabolic disorders.
Main duties of the job
As a senior clinician the Consultant will be involved in more complex cases, often in partnership with other agencies and almost always in conjunction with another member of the adult IMD team. Clinician workloads are closely monitored by team managers and supervisors to ensure equity of caseload.
The post holder will have 7 planned activities per week, including clinical, CPD and the remainder for management, audit, teaching, educational supervision, research or special interest.

Qualifications
* Completion (or within 6 months) of CCT/higher specialist training or equivalent.
* PhD or higher degree.
* Participation in an advanced IT training course.
Professional Registration
* Full registration with General Medical Council.
* Inclusion on the specialist register / admission to the register within 6 months of interview in Metabolic Medicine.
* Evidence of accredited clinical and educational supervision of medical learners.
Knowledge, training and experience
* Clinical experience and expertise in Metabolic Medicine.
* Experience managing adults with a wide range of inherited metabolic diseases.
* Understanding of laboratory diagnosis in lysosomal storage diseases and general metabolic conditions.
* Evidence of continuing personal and professional development and keeping up to date with medical advances.
* Experience of recent and current research/relevant publications in managing pregnant patients with inborn errors of metabolism.
* Understanding of genetics and some experience of genetic counselling.
