Applications are invited for a substantive and a potential 12 month locum post of Consultant in Major Trauma and Emergency General Surgery at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. This post is based primarily at Queens Medical Centre.
The post holder will work alongside the other consultants within the Major trauma consultant team and other surgeons in the General and Vascular Surgery directorate. The consultant will be responsible to the Head of Major trauma. The successful candidate will be expected to be within 6 months of their CCT at the time of interview and to have evidence of commitment to or experience of Major Trauma/EGS. The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the out-patient and surgical treatment of patients within general surgery, and will be encouraged to develop a sub‑specialty interest.
Main duties of the job
* Major Trauma component: run the Major Trauma service and join the operating rota on a 1:8 basis, including weekends and night care.
* Emergency General Surgery component: assess and investigate the surgical intake within the Surgical Triage Unit and deliver acute surgery to EGS patients on a 1:6 basis Monday‑Thursday in day‑time hours.
* Elective General Surgery component: perform a bi‑weekly operating list and a weekly clinic, across all the Treatment Centre, Queens Medical Centre, Day Surgery Unit and City Hospital. Some commitments will be in the evenings and weekends.
NUH hosts the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre (MTC), a level 1 centre covering a catchment area of 4 million people, and has a bespoke 26‑beded MT unit opened at QMC in 2012. The unit operates on a consultant‑of‑the‑week model and has strong links with the National Rehabilitation Centre at Stanford Hall, aiming to deliver improved outcomes.
NUH has one of the largest emergency general surgical services in the UK, undertaking a large number of emergency laparotomies. The service is consultant‑led and supported by ACPs, Specialist Doctors and Surgical Trainees, with 24/7 sub‑specialist acute surgery in Colorectal, HPB, UGI and Major Trauma.
Elective General Surgery teams include Upper GI, Colorectal, HPB, Endocrine and Renal Transplant. The service is supported by Consultants, Registrars and Surgical Care Practitioners.
