PEOPLE are at the HEART of everything we do
This video gives a flavour of what it is like to work at our Trust and why some of our staff love working here
An opportunity has arisen for a dedicated individual with a passion for quality and improvement, and strong leadership skills to join our friendly Bowel Cancer Screening team. We are offering a dual role within the team which was successful in its first iteration nearly four years ago. In a drive to improve uptake in bowel cancer screening, the role of Health Improvement Specialist is key and collaboration with the seven other health improvement specialists in London provides an excellent foundation for the projects (some joint) commenced by the previous post holder.
The title Deputy Programme Manager forms the other half of this role. The postholder will provide support and deputise for the administrative aspects of the Clinical Programme Manager's role whilst line managing the Admin lead and supporting the admin team. Collaboration with NHSE and the Screening Quality Assurance Service (SQAS), and working closely with the Director of Screening, the Clinical Programme Manager and the nursing team is essential in order to provide our population with the highest possible standard of care through their screening pathway. If you have strong leadership skills with an interest in health improvement and experience in the programme, we would love to hear from you.
Main duties of the job
This is a dual role that comprises the post holder having the roles of the Health Improvement Specialist and Deputy Programme Manager (DPM)
* The Deputy Programme Manager will work closely with, support and deputise for all administrative aspects of the Clinical Programme Manager’s role (CPM).
* The DPM will work closely with the Lead Specialist Screening Practitioner (LSSP); support and line manage the Administration Lead and provide support for the admin team.
* The role includes day-to-day leadership and management of administrative aspects of the BCSP in conjunction with the Admin Lead.
As a key member of the BCSP’s management team, the DPM will provide timely, efficient and effective business management support to the Bowel Cancer screening service and the care group so that the Trust can provide the best quality clinical services to the people in our care within the available resources.
The primary aspect of the Health Improvement Specialist role is to conduct evidence-based health promotion activities for the Bowel Cancer Screening Centre at BHRUT. The candidate will work to raise awareness, identify and reduce barriers to screening to improve the uptake of bowel cancer screening across the participating clinical commissioning groups (CCGs).
The post holder will carry out a coordinated programme with community organisations, working in conjunction with the Northeast London (NEL) Screening Centre’s Health Improvement Specialist. The overall aim is to improve uptake and coverage to a minimum national standard. A key role is to raise awareness of the bowel cancer screening programme with local GPs, community groups and the general population within the populations of BHR.
Working for our organisation
We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with. We’re no longer in special measures; we’ve opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH); and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, was named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal in 2024.
We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.
Our patients are benefitting from our Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch.
These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 94,000 scans a year.
The majority of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients.
