Our Heavy Civil Infrastructure Division specialises in all aspects of foundations, geotechnics and tunnelling, and contributes to some of the largest and most demanding structures in the world. Our expertise includes delivering value management and value engineering, geotechnical advice, geotechnical information management, site investigations, rock engineering, slope engineering, geoseismic design, and 2D/3D numerical modelling both nationally and internationally. The projects we have engaged in include HS1, HS2, Victoria Station Upgrade, Doha Metro, Northern Line Extension, London Heathrow Third Runway Expansion, Crossrail and Crossrail 2, Nuclear New-build and Hydropower schemes and other global projects. We were also voted Consulting Firm of the Year at the 2024 Ground Engineering Awards.


Overview of the role

As a Principal or Associate Geotechnical Engineer in our Foundations and Geotechnics team, you will broaden your experience and work with a range of public and private sector clients on key and major projects. You will manage and produce design solutions that comply with Eurocodes, report specifications and drawings covering foundations and geotechnics. You’ll deliver various geotechnical and underground structure projects, provide technical leadership, support larger projects as client liaison, contribute to risk assessments, employ sustainability, and undertake budgeting and cost control.


Key responsibilities and duties include:

* Client liaison
* Foundation, retaining wall and earthwork design
* Management and delivery of Ground Investigation (scope, specifications, supervision, GIRs, GDRs etc.)
* Manage small and medium projects, including developing client relationships
* Travel to project sites when necessary for project delivery
* Managing medium to large single and multi-disciplinary design teams
* Opportunities to work on major national and international projects
* Lead and manage numerical modelling activities


Candidate specification

As a Principal or Associate Geotechnical Engineer you are able to direct and deliver multiple concurrent projects or one large project on time and within budget. You have designed various geotechnical and foundation solutions using current standards and Eurocodes and have worked on a variety of projects. You have strong interpersonal skills, are comfortable liaising with clients, build professional relationships, and demonstrate technical expertise. You have gained project management skills and have acted in a technical lead role on numerous projects. You are an effective communicator, collaborate with all levels of staff and clients, build relationships, and work autonomously. You are keen to develop your digital literacy in geotechnics and prioritise client needs to deliver high‑quality design.

In addition you are able to demonstrate the following:

* Masters or PhD in Civil Engineering with emphasis on geotechnics
* Relevant geotechnical experience with technical project delivery
* Chartered Engineer with ICE or equivalent
* Experience managing medium to large teams of engineers
* Experience managing ground investigations, GIRs and GDRs
* Experience guiding and nurturing a team of engineers in technical development
* Has mentored early‑career professionals
* Prepared to travel nationally and internationally as needed for any project
* Numerical modelling experience
* Knowledge of programming/scripting (VBA, Python, etc.) is advantageous but not essential
