Urgent Care Out-of-Hours Service – General Practitioner (GP)

Berkshire Healthcare is seeking dedicated general practitioners (GPs) to join our Urgent Care Out of Hours service (WestCall) which provides urgent medical advice and assessment to all patients living in the Berkshire West area when day‑time primary care is closed.

Operating weekdays between 6:30 pm to 8 am and 24 hours across weekends and bank holidays, our service provides advice and treatment for patients who have called 111 and require urgent primary care.

The service is delivered by a multi‑disciplinary team that includes GPs, Nurses, Paramedic Practitioners, Pharmacists and administrative and operational colleagues. We will provide you with all the diagnostic equipment required for the role, including access to the latest clinical software and point‑of‑care testing. A driver and a vehicle are also provided for your home visits. Primary Care Centre healthcare assistants are available to take baseline observations and assist with ECG and urine analysis on request.

This face‑to‑face clinical role is based at our Primary Care Centre in the West Berkshire Community Hospital in Thatcham, Berkshire.

Hours: Monday & Thursday for 6 weeks 18:30‑24:00, followed by Wednesday & Thursday for 6 weeks 18:30‑24:00 (creating a 12‑week pattern). Saturday 18:00‑24:00 & Sunday 13:00‑19:00 / 19:00‑24:00. A rotation/pattern of working hours is available.


Responsibilities

* Provide timely clinical care at our Primary Care Centres based at the West Berkshire Community Hospital.
* Access hospital discharge letters and patient test results to facilitate safe patient care and minimise clinical risk.
* Ensure that, where appropriate, the patient is referred for further management with the relevant service, e.g. secondary care specialties, urgent community response and other community services.
* Contribute to the training and development of clinical and non‑clinical staff, e.g. GP registrars, trainee advanced practitioners, paramedics.
* Work within local prescribing guidelines (SCAN/Microguide) with the ability to prescribe electronically.


Qualifications

* MRCGP or equivalent.
* Inclusion on NHS England’s Medical Performers list.
* Ability to manage common acute illness presentations in both adults and paediatric patients.
* Maintain up‑to‑date appraisal and revalidation.
* Experience of working in primary care / OOH / urgent care.
