Job overview

The Department of Anaesthesia at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is offering two 6 to 12-month senior clinical fellow posts in general anaesthesia at Charing Cross Hospital. These posts are available from 1 November 2025 with start dates after this time also being considered. They are ideal for Specialty Registrars nearing the end of training, or anaesthetists who have completed training and wish to round off experience before securing a consultant post.

Applicants must have fully completed the FRCA or an equivalent qualification and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in anaesthesia and intensive care in a structured training program. The clinical duties cover Stage 2 and 3 of the Royal College of Anaesthesia (RCOA) curriculum (sub-specialties Airway and Neuro-anaesthesia available). Fellows will have opportunities to develop non-clinical skills in education, research, and quality improvement with publication preparation. Fellows will participate in a 1:8 senior registrar on-call rota, alongside other residents. There is a strong culture of research and audit within the department.

Main duties

As the senior clinical fellow in anaesthesia, the post-holder will participate in a 1:8 on-call rota and will spend clinical time on a variety of surgical lists. The department aims to provide opportunities to spend more time in preferred sub-specialties to support career goals.

* Specialties covered at Charing Cross hospital include neurosurgery (including interventional neuro-radiology and thrombectomy), head and neck (including plastics reconstructions, free flaps and robotic-assisted surgery), complex airway procedures (including laryngo-tracheal reconstruction and airway lasering), major urology (including robotic-assisted surgery), ENT, plastics, major colorectal (including HIPEC), major orthopaedics and day surgery.
* The department supports research and audit projects; the post-holder will contribute to education, research, leadership and quality improvement activities.
* Normal theatre working day 07:30 – 17:30; Long Day 07:30 – 20:00 (1:8); Night shift 19:30 – 08:00 (1:8).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• The senior clinical fellow will participate in a 1:8 on-call rota; clinical time on a variety of surgical lists. The department aims to support Fellows to spend more time in preferred sub-specialties to advance their career goals.

• Surgical specialties at Charing Cross include neurosurgery (with interventional neuro-radiology and thrombectomy), head and neck (plastics reconstructions, free flaps, robotic-assisted surgery), complex airway procedures (laryngo-tracheal reconstruction, airway lasering), major urology (robotic-assisted surgery), ENT, plastics, major colorectal (including HIPEC), major orthopaedics and day surgery.

• Hammersmith Hospital includes renal, hepatobiliary, cardio-thoracic surgery, major gynaecological oncology, upper GI and endocrine surgery anaesthesia.

• St Mary\'s hospital is a London Major Trauma Centre with quaternary vascular service and busy obstetric unit; colorectal, oesophageal, general, bariatric and paediatric surgery are also provided there.

• The clinical duties cover Stage 2 and 3 of the RCOA; non-clinical activities in education, research, and quality improvement are available.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria

* Full GMC registered/licensed Medical Practitioner
* Final FRCA or equivalent

Desirable criteria

* Postgraduate qualification or further degree
* Distinctions, prizes

Language/Communication Skills

Essential criteria

* Excellent understanding of English, both written and oral.

Academic Achievements including Research/Publications

Essential criteria

* Good understanding of principles of research.

Desirable criteria

* Participated in research
* Peer reviewed publications
* Experience of presenting data locally/ regionally/ nationally

Audit

Essential criteria

* Understanding of the application of audit and clinical governance to clinical practice.

Desirable criteria

* Initiated and completed quality improvement projects

Teaching & Training

Essential criteria

* Experience of delivering teaching and training to undergraduates/postgraduates and allied health professionals.

Desirable criteria

* Trained educator (e.g. GIC, Train the Trainer)
* Initiated, led and delivered a teaching programme

Clinical skills

Essential criteria

* Demonstrates a broad range of advanced clinical and assessment skills in anaesthesia.

Desirable criteria

* Advanced life support (ALS) provider or equivalent, ATLS, ALS, EPLS

Knowledge/skills

Essential criteria

* Minimum of 5 years\' experience in anaesthesia and intensive care in a structured training programme.
* Knowledge of UK Health Systems.
* Understands current issues in the NHS & Anaesthesia.

Desirable criteria

* Evidence of developing subspecialty interest in anaesthesia relevant to ICHNT
