Senior Fellow in Glaucoma

Applications are invited for Glaucoma Fellows in Ophthalmology for 12 months at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust. These posts are to support the Glaucoma service.
The Ophthalmology department in UHB is spread across 4 sites -- Queen Elizabeth hospital, Good Hope hospital with the responsible hospital being Solihull hospital. The Department covers a breadth of Ophthalmology Services including Glaucoma, Cornea, Medical Retina, Paediatric Ophthalmology, VR Surgery and General Ophthalmology. The department consists of 40 consultants across the sites. As well as consultant ophthalmologists the eye service is supported by staff and specialist doctors, Specialty Registrars, an Orthoptic Department, Optometrists and imaging technicians, clinical nurse specialists as well as nurses.
Main duties of the job
This is a full time job working 40 hours as follows:
* Eight clinical sessions
* One session for clinical administration
* One session for research and professional development
Clinical sessions deemed clinical activities are by definition 4 hours and the successful appointee will be expected to work flexibly.
The successful candidate is expected to have a minimum of 4 years post-graduate training in general ophthalmology and in addition have further training and experience in managing glaucoma patients. The successful applicant is expected to have a good understanding of modern glaucoma management and be capable of managing routine glaucoma cases with minimal supervision. Clinical experience of managing acute glaucoma and complex glaucoma cases is essential for this post. The applicant should also be able to undertake routine cataract surgery with minimal supervision and have experience of glaucoma laser treatment (SLT, YAG, Diode) and surgery.

Job responsibilities
The successful post holders can expect to gain experience in managing acute and complex clinical, laser and surgical management of glaucoma patients which would form a firm foundation for a senior fellowship in glaucoma. We have close links with the Glaucoma service at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre.
Qualifications
* Medical Degree from a recognised University
* Full GMC registration
* Eligibility to live and work in the UK
Experience
* A minimum of 4 years full time post graduate training (its equivalent gained on a part time basis) or equivalent experience and competencies.
* Experience in management of complex and surgical glaucoma cases
* Management of high pressure glaucoma in acute setting
* Previous experience in performing complex cataract surgery
* PXF
* Small Pupil
* High Myopia
* Patients with previous glaucoma
* Previous experience of glaucoma surgery
* Trabeculectomy
* Previous experience in glaucoma Laser procedures
* YAG laser capsulotomy in glaucoma patients
* Experience of managing secondary glaucoma related to co-existing ophthalmic disease
* Corneal disease
* Ocular Surface Problems
* Vitreo-retinal disease
* Neuro-ophthalmic problems
* Peer reviewed publications
* Evidence of participation in teaching activities
* Evidence of participation in audit and clinical governance activities
* Evidenced technical skills as described in the job description.
* Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals.
* Full general ophthalmic surgical training with experience of general ophthalmology with sub- specialty expertise in Oculoplastics.
