The Role
Natural England requires two Chartered Surveyors to carry out land agency work to support nature recovery and manage natural capital and ecosystem services on the Natural England Estate. The role is free from fee target pressure and offers flexible working opportunities.
This is an opportunity to work for the Estate Management arm of Natural England, which holds a mixed leasehold and freehold estate of about 65,000ha of land, workshops, offices and other buildings. The Estate comprises 134 National Nature Reserves (NNRs) covering important wildlife sites in England. Chartered Surveyors are essential to fulfilling conservation and income potential while meeting legal obligations and providing value for money.
You will join a national team of Surveyors/Land Agents and work across the country as part of a wider team of conservation professionals. These roles predominantly cover casework in the North of England (County Durham, Northumberland, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire), with national strategic work required at times.
The role offers flexibility for home or office working or a mix of both. Location base is flexible, but you are expected to spend 2 – 3 days per fortnight with Area Teams and NNRs, and to work from an NE office at least once a week.
Key areas of work
* Estate Management – manage all tenure casework for a geographic area
* Professional advice – provide advice on casework, legal and valuation matters related to the NE Estate; may involve internal/external advisers and collaboration with Area Teams, NNR staff, the National NNR team and NE’s legal team
* Align Estate processes with NE regulatory needs and participate in policy areas and schemes (e.g., tenure and protected sites such as Telecoms or wildfowling guidance)
* Income generation – explore traditional and new potential of Estate assets and opportunities from environmental markets (e.g., Biodiversity Net Gain & Nutrient Mitigation)
* Acquisitions and declarations – advise on NNR acquisitions and National Nature Reserve designation
* NNR records – updating and maintaining property records and mapping
* Finance – support payments/receipts and procurement for valuation and other contracts
* Contribute to reviews and updates of upcoming Government policy and Estate Management procedures
