Locum Consultant Plastic Surgeon

We are seeking an enthusiastic colleague to join our team of 10 other Consultant Plastic Surgeons, all with a subspecialty interest, based at both The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, and The Friarage Hospital, Northallerton.
This is a locum full-time post in Plastic Surgery and is a new post that we would hope to make substantive in future. The successful candidate will be welcomed into our busy plastic surgery and hand surgery services.The intended start date is from September 2025.
This post can be developed to support a range of subspecialty interests according to candidates' skill sets. There will be a core requirement to support our microvascular lower limb trauma services though participation in our general plastic surgery on call rota. This will be through a 1 in 6 on call week for Plastic surgery supported by scheduled daily triage clinics, and daily access to shared emergency theatre lists for adult and paediatric patients.
Main duties of the job
Our department delivers a broad and general range of services including: adult and paediatric elective and emergency hand surgery, peripheral nerve injury care, breast reconstruction, head and neck surgery (supported by a TIG post), lower limb trauma, skin cancer, vascular malformations (national referral base), hypospadias, burns facility services, pressure sore and pelvic defect reconstruction, diabetic foot care, spinal injuries wound and upper limb care, chest wall reconstruction, and electrochemotherapy. There are existing research links with the regional universities, and a collaborative regional research network. There is a new Academic Surgical Unit being developed across multiple specialties with the support of the Royal College of Surgeons and the University of York.
Complex lower limb trauma management is supported by an Orthoplastic MDT group that benefits from job planned MDT meetings and clinics and use of both planned and emergency orthopaedic and plastic surgery theatre capacity. We have good cross-specialty working relationships and our Major Trauma Centre services are located together on the James Cook site.A microvascular skill set is essential for this post to support our Major Trauma Centre services.
About us
Our department offers a range of skin cancer services which include surgical excision and reconstruction at all levels of complexity, sentinel lymph node biopsy, block dissection, and electrochemotherapy. There would be a requirement to take part in this service to some level according to skill set. Skin cancer is managed with a weekly MDT and is supported in Plastic Surgery by three specialist nurses.
There is a busy nerve injury service for upper and lower limb problems, including brachial plexus injuries and thoracic outlet syndrome. An interest could be welcomed, supported and developed if relevant.
We have a range of specialist paediatric work, including a high volume of hypospadias surgery. There is a paediatric vascular malformation service, a children's hand service, and general paediatric plastic surgery. An interest in these areas would also be welcomed and supported if relevant.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
* Inclusion on the GMC Specialist register or within 6 months of expected date of inclusion
* FRCS(Plast) or equivalent qualifications in training
* Higher Surgical Degree
Clinical Specialty Skills
* Depth and breadth of experience to participate in the care of both elective and emergency plastic surgery patients
* Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Plastic Surgery
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in general Plastic Surgery, including skin cancer and lower limb trauma
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
* Competent in microsurgical techniques
Skills Knowledge and Aptitute
* Evidence of working in an MDT
* Ability to organise and prioritise complex demands
* Evidence of teaching and training skills for resident doctors
