An opportunity has arisen for an Activity Worker to join our Psychiatric Intensive Care Team. This comes at an exciting time, as our team is expanding and will soon be moving from our current unit at Stepping Hill Hospital [Stockport] to a new 10-bedded unit at Tameside.

Our purpose-built unit is being constructed at the Tameside General Hospital site and will be ready for us to join by 31st August 2022. Our current unit will then be extensively refurbished to provide specialist intensive care for 7 female service users.


Main duties of the job

* Work with the MDT to plan, organise, and deliver ward-based activity programmes on an individual and group basis within the Psychiatric Intensive Care unit.
* Provide specialist support to patients and work collaboratively with the MDT.
* Adopt a non-judgmental approach with patients, based on respect and dignity.
* Undertake ward-based activities that promote recovery, are valued, and increase independence.
* Contribute to the development of an overall ward-based activity programme that promotes involvement and choice, providing therapeutic, recovery-focused, and age-appropriate activities.
* Design, manage, and promote health improvement programmes for patients.
* Support medical and nursing staff in completing physical health monitoring.


Working for our organisation

Our team provides short-term intensive assessment, treatment, and support to Service Users experiencing a mental health crisis with complex needs.

We work in a trauma-informed way, utilising the RAID model of care, aiming to work in the least restrictive way possible while maintaining patient safety.

Successful candidates will undergo mandatory and bespoke training to work effectively within our PICU environment.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main Purpose of Job: To provide diverse ward-based activities for all patients, including health promotion and monitoring.
Position in Organisation: Responsible to the Unit Manager and Occupational Therapist.
Scope and Authority: Under guidance, to plan and carry out ward-based group activities independently. To undertake other duties as appropriate to the band, when requested by Senior Staff.
All staff must comply with Trust policies and work towards the Trust's strategic goals.


Person specification


Education/Qualifications

* NVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care or equivalent experience
* PMVA Qualification or commitment to complete (Trust funded)
* Additional qualifications in art, music, reminiscence, etc., are desirable


Experience

* Recent experience in healthcare or care home settings
* Experience coordinating and running group activities
* Experience working within a team in health or social care
* Experience in mental health or dementia services
* Experience working on a mental health inpatient unit
* Experience working within MDT mental health teams


Knowledge

* Understanding of dementia and mental health difficulties
* Knowledge of the importance of meaningful activity for well-being
* Ability to design suitable activities for patient needs
* Knowledge of engaging community groups and arts organizations


Skills and Abilities

* Ability to work independently and responsibly
* Clear verbal and written communication skills
* Ability to conduct risk assessments for activities
* Good time management skills
* Flexibility to meet service needs
* Confidence to facilitate group activities independently
* Motivational skills for older people with mental health issues
* Effective communication skills
* Willingness to learn and develop
* Seek out best practices and innovations in therapeutic activities
