Are you an experienced, dynamic Children’s nurse with a passion for education and high-quality care?

An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Emergency Departments to join the education team as a Band 6 Clinical Skills Educator.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated and flexible individual, with a strong focus on training and education to support the Band 7 Clinical Educators to develop and drive forward a robust education programme for the nursing workforce within our ED departments.

The post holder will be an experienced Children’s ED nurse and will work closely with the senior nursing team and MTD to deliver high quality education and training, helping staff to realise their potential and to identify and develop their Emergency Department skills.

This is an exciting time for our Emergency Departments, as we have just opened our brand-new department on the Scarborough site. This role will support the growing Paediatric ED nursing establishment, ensuring training, progression, and high standards of patient care.

This fantastic post will allow you to shape the nursing and healthcare staff of the future through the provision of high-quality education and learning opportunities and leadership.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Skills Educator main duties include but are not inclusive to:

1. Plan and facilitate training days for the nursing teams and student nurses.
2. Able to present and teach, demonstrating a sound teaching approach utilising mixed media, simulation and creating a positive learning environment.
3. Work alongside nursing staff and students to provide direct clinical based teaching.
4. Support new starters and help to co-ordinate the preceptorship period.
5. Maintain a high profile within the clinical area acting as a role model positively influencing practice at all times and challenging poor practice.
6. Develop, implement, and deliver competency based clinical education.
7. Work with clinical teams to ensure students are exposed to a wide range of learning opportunities.
8. Further develop own competence and ability to teach a wider range of skills as required to disseminate best practice.
9. Review and update clinical competencies in line with best practice.
10. Respond to educational requirements that emerge from service need.
11. Support the Band 7 Clinical Educator to deliver strategic goals and implement organisational change.
12. Work across organisational and professional boundaries and provide specialist advice and expertise.
13. Policy development.

Person specification

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria

22. Registered Children’s Nurse, Registered with the NMC
23. Recognised teaching certificate or equivalent experience
24. Educated to degree level Evidence of CPD relevant to current role.
25. Willing to undergo training as necessary to undertake role
26. EPALS or APALS

Desirable criteria

27. Teaching qualification
28. TILS Trained

Experience & Knowledge Required

Essential criteria

29. At least 2 years post registration experience working with children in the Emergency Department
30. Working with a wide range of professionals
31. Awareness of current issues in health care Standards of Professional Practice
32. Knowledge surrounding CAMHS and Safeguarding
33. Knowledge of RCPCH Emergency standards and RCN ED competency framework

Desirable criteria

34. Practice experience across acute paediatric settings
35. Previous experience of delivering clinical training or support e.g. Link Trainer/Nurse

36. Positive attitude and proven skills in delivery, facilitation and development of training and education
37. Ability to identify own and others training needs.
38. Ability to motivate and influence others, demonstrating resilience
39. Ability to communicate effectively with MDT colleagues.
40. Can demonstrate awareness of Quality and Safety Agenda in relation to patient care.
41. Ability to competently perform clinical skills.
42. Can demonstrate an awareness of risk management.
43. Ability to undertake and evaluate audit data
44. Ability to organise and prioritise situations and workload.

Desirable criteria

45. Experience of reflective practice.
46. Able educate both formally and informally.
47. Awareness of learning and development strategies.
48. Ability to develop training packages.
49. Proven skills in using simulation as a teaching tool

51. Evidence of sound written and verbal communication skills
52. Competent computer skills
53. Experience of dealing appropriately with sensitive and confidential information
