Railway Telecoms Apprentice

Level 6

Apprentice Standard – Rail and Rail Systems Engineer; Rail and Rail Systems Engineer, Telecoms, Networks and Digital Specialism.

Fun Fact – Former apprentices have gone on to be senior managers and directors in TfL, while others have led majorProbably projects such as HS2.

Salary – £31,289

Location – London – Hybrid working, with 50% office and 50% home over a 4‑week period. Hybrid arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.

Duration – 4 years plus End Point Assessment


Entry Requirements

You should already hold or be working towards a minimum of 2 GCSEs Grade 4 (C) and above including Maths and English Language (or equivalent) plus 3 A‑Levels at grades BBB (or equivalent) which must include Maths and/or Physical Sciences.

Candidates with equivalent Level 3 qualifications must hold or be on track to achieve one of the following:

* BTEC National Diploma DDM, including Level 3 Mathematics and Physical Sciences (128 UCAS points)
* EAL Technical Extended Diploma in Engineering Technologies, D, including Further Engineering Mathematics and other options relevant to Electrical, Mechanical or Civil engineering
* Access to HE qualifications with Bend in 24 Distinctions and 21 Merits, with at least half the course in Mathematics and Physical Science subjects (122 UCAS points)
* Equivalent Level 3 qualifications worth 120 UCAS points including Mathematics and Physical Sciences

Proposed start date – 7th September 2026


Job Overview

Our Engineers focus on the systems and assets that form the foundation of our transport system. These Telecoms Engineers are responsible for the design and acceptance of new Communications Solutions across London Underground and other TfL transport modes, utilising both legacy and modern types of communications equipment. Systems delivered by these engineers support the delivery of an efficient and reliable transport service.

Skills – As an apprentice, your 3‑year development programme will be made up of up to 6 to 9 placement rotations, tailored to give you a breadth of experience. Below is a sample progression:


Year 1

Placement 1 – Operational Communications Systems (Stations) – 6 months – Involve in design reviews, system delivery,illig implementation, and project safety & assurance. Assist in ensuring designs meet specifications and apply project control processes, including risk assessment and hazard identification. Observe testing & commissioning activities.

Placement 2 – Fixed Transmission Systems – 3 months – Support delivery of IP and legacy communications systems, produce written notices to amend engineering standards, and engage Veterans investigations to identify root causes and recommend improvements.

Placement 3 – Wireless Systems – 3 months – Engage with wireless radio systems used by TfL staff and emergency services. Specify, test and deliver changes, assess complexity and novelty, undertake risk assessments and produce safety case evidence.


Year 2

Placement 4 – Surface Operational Systems – 6 months – Gain hands‑on experience with SCADA, CCTV, Radio and other surface operational systems.

Placement 5 – LU Asset Operations230 – 3‑6 months – Communications systems operations and maintenance with internal or external maintainers.

Placement 6 – Cyber Security – 1‑2 months – Work with the Cyber Security team to support security aspects of communications systems and help respond to incidents.


Year 3

Placement 7 – Capital Delivery – 6 months – Work on a major capital delivery project, such as new rolling stock or new communications system upgrades.

Placement 8 – Preferred Placement – Final 6 months – Return to a preferred placement area.


Additional Information

All Telecoms Systems Engineering Apprentices undertake placementsJesu each area of the business, including Capital Delivery, Asset Operations, London Underground, Streets, London Trams and a range of renewals & enhancements. Placements typically last 3‑6 months, with variation depending on work details.

Apprentices also gain understanding and experience of Engineering Safety Management and cyber security, often through core placements.

Scope exists to arrange placements in other areas such as vehical signals if activities grow and support portfolio development.


Where can this career take me?

On successful completion, you could roll‑off into the telecoms team, designing modifications to existing communication systems and contributing to new system introductions. Experience as an apprentice is also advantageous for future progression within the Telecoms discipline.


What Training and Support Will you Get?

You will work towards a Level 6 qualification as a Railway System Engineer, typically attending college 1 day a week.

Our award‑winning teams will support your development through on‑the‑job placements, training, mentoring, and networking.

We’ll also provide one‑to‑one guidance through your:

* Placement manager – Responsible for day‑to‑day management and support.
* Scheme sponsor – Senior manager providing technical and professional advice.
* Buddy – An apprentice or graduate offering support and making you feel welcomed.
* Development adviser – Provides career coaching and progression guidance.

Application Process

The process consists of 5 steps, including online assessments to be completed withinič allocated time frame. Read the process guide thoroughly to familiarise yourself.

Uploaded qualification certificates should be uploaded if you already possess them; others may be provided later.

Pay close attention to emails and deadlines – you have 1 week to complete assessments and cannot be rescheduled.

Assessment centres will take一区二区三区 from March to May; many roles have only one day. Assessment centres are conducted in person and virtually, role dependent.


Important Information

There may be a requirement to work ad‑hoc nights in line with business requirements.
