The Opportunity:
The purpose of this role is to carry out manufacturing activities to GMP standards within the Scientific Preparation Facility using the OneLab electronic laboratory notebook.
The Research Technician ensures their knowledge of methods used in the Macclesfield laboratories is fully utilized to improve products and processes, exceeding customer expectations.
The technician liaises with customers for new product requests, suggesting improvements to formulations or methods based on their technical understanding.
They also have a good understanding of the products used on the site (both analyst-prepared and externally purchased) and can proactively offer comparable in-house alternatives.
The role involves seeking sustainability improvements and cost-effective service enhancements while maintaining high-quality standards.
Position Profile
The Research Technician typically has multiple years of laboratory experience and a strong understanding of products used on the site, supporting the preparation of medias, buffers, and solutions to meet user requirements and standards. Responsibilities include manufacturing, operational activities, customer liaison, and compliance with standards and SLAs.
Major Job Duties and Responsibilities
1. Perform manufacturing of products to high standards, including weighing, batch recording, operation of equipment, dispensing, and measuring techniques.
2. Complete electronic batch records accurately and raise errors as needed.
3. Perform routine equipment maintenance and calibration, reporting faults accordingly.
4. Review formulations and methods, liaising with customers for improvements.
5. Research new methods and stay updated with changes.
6. Implement sustainability and green chemistry initiatives.
7. Manage workload to deliver high-quality service, both individually and as part of a team.
8. Maintain laboratory housekeeping, glassware, and equipment.
9. Manage waste streams according to procedures, ensuring proper documentation.
10. Use the Avantor Inventory Management system to maintain supplies.
11. Serve as a point of contact for specific areas, ensuring excellent customer service.
12. Follow health and safety regulations and support safety initiatives.
13. Identify and lead process improvements.
14. Support colleagues with cover, training, and sharing expertise.
15. Support change controls, audits, and quality events.
16. Provide metrics aligned with KPIs and SLAs.
Qualifications
* Degree in a scientific subject or equivalent, with at least 1 year of GMP laboratory experience.
* Health and Safety qualifications are advantageous.
Knowledge
* 1-2 years’ lab experience, familiarity with H&S regulations.
* Experience with customer service roles, SLAs, KPIs.
* Knowledge of SOPs, GxP, and regulated environments.
* Understanding of GMP in pharma.
* Strong knowledge of product preparation and possibly analytical/microbiological testing.
Skills
* Excellent communication and IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
* Good planning, attention to detail, and document writing skills.
* Ability to propose improvements and present information effectively.
Abilities
* Flexible team worker, self-motivated, and committed.
* Customer-focused, capable of training others, and proactive in quality and process improvements.
* Adaptable to changing priorities and dedicated to high standards.
Environmental Conditions
* Mainly lab-based, with some office work.
* Must adhere to PPE and safety protocols, working with hazardous chemicals.
* Physically demanding, involving walking, standing, manual handling, and DSE work.
