Description

The job itself

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Ecologist to join the Council's busy Planning Service within the Natural Environment Team.

This is an exciting time to join the service, with Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) now a key part of the planning system. You will play a central role in ensuring the effective delivery of BNG through development, including the assessment of Biodiversity Gain Plans, ecological surveys, and submissions under the Habitat Regulations.

Working closely with Planning Officers, elected Members, developers, and consultees, you will also provide clear and proportionate ecological advice to officers, members of the public and other stakeholders.

About the Team and Service

We are a supportive, forward‑thinking team, committed to continuous improvement and professional development. The Planning Service is award winning being RTPI Planning Authority of the Year for Yorkshire 2025 and is embracing the opportunities offered by digital planning as part of our wider service transformation.

We actively support staff development and offer a modern working environment, blending office‑based and home working with flexible working hours.

Professional Development

We are committed to supporting both chartered and aspiring members of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM). We offer:

1. Paid professional subscriptions.
2. Access to regular and high-quality CPD.
3. A wide range of training opportunities, both in-house and with external partners, covering ecology, planning, management, and leadership.

The Area

The East Riding of Yorkshire covers a large and diverse area, stretching from York to Hull and the Yorkshire coast. This includes extensive rural landscapes, affluent market towns, major employment sites, regeneration areas, and nationally and internationally designated ecological sites and landscapes.

This variety provides a rich, challenging, and rewarding workload, ideal for an experienced ecologist seeking a new challenge or someone looking to progress their career within local government.

The Council and Planning Service are based in the centre of the historic market town of Beverley, regularly recognised as one of the best places to live in the north of England. Beverley offers outstanding schools, attractive housing, a vibrant town centre, and exceptional natural and cultural assets including Beverley Minster and the Westwood.

What We Offer

4. Flexible and blended working arrangements.
5. Generous holiday allowance.
6. Membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme.
7. Paid professional subscriptions.
8. Support for continuing professional development and training.
9. Discounted gym membership.
10. Equality and Diversity.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is committed to equality of opportunity in employment and welcomes applications from all sections of the community.
