Overview
We are recruiting a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing Water Consultancy team across the UK. The role involves working on AMP8 and AMP9 projects and contributing to a range of wastewater programmes, from urban drainage to water quality modelling and pumping system design.
About the Team
The team consists of engineers, designers, modellers and data analysts who provide asset management and operational strategy development for water industry clients. Collaboration and innovation are essential to meet client needs.
About You
* Experience liaising with clients to understand needs, interpret data and develop project plans.
* Proficiency in producing technical specifications, schedules, reports, and designing pumping and aeration systems.
* Ability to produce general arrangement drawings, 3D models, 2D plans, sections, and piping & instrumentation diagrams.
* Strong communication skills for collaborative design discussions, technical workshops and safety reviews, including HAZOPs and ALMs.
* Knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes and experience assessing site infrastructure for mechanical design.
Your Responsibilities
* Balance workload across multiple long‑term projects with water companies and contractors.
* Seek positive outcomes for projects and the community.
* Collaborate with junior and senior engineers and other stakeholders to support delivery.
* Interpret and develop technical drawings, preferably using AutoCAD and/or Inventor.
* Conduct asset condition surveys and prepare reports and recommendations.
* Produce process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
* Prepare mechanical design deliverables: calculations, reports, specifications, datasheets, drawings, schedules, and procurement documentation.
* Provide support to comply with Design duties under CDM, including risk assessments.
* Maintain QA/QC systems and ensure high standards.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
* Solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
* Experience in the water industry.
* Skills in pump selection and pumping system design.
* Use of P&IDs to create equipment, valve, and pipe schedules.
* Production of specifications, reports and technical documentation.
* Compliance with CDM regulations and safety‑centric design.
* Time, cost and quality management.
* Travel to operational and construction sites for surveys, inspections and testing.
* Knowledge of AutoCAD or similar design software is advantageous.
Qualifications
* Degree‑level qualification in mechanical engineering or a closely allied subject, ideally IMechE accredited.
