Job Overview
An opportunity has arisen within the Pre Operative Assessment Department for a Staff Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner.
We are seeking to appoint an ODP or Staff Nurse who is enthusiastic, highly motivated, and hardworking to join the department at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
Ideally, you should have proven experience in an acute surgical or assessment setting, be able to use your own initiative, work well under pressure, and have a flexible attitude towards your work. The successful candidates should also be able to demonstrate a desire and willingness to contribute and to be proactive in the development of our POAC.
Our priority is to ensure a high-quality, focused, and safe assessment service where patients are treated with dignity and respect. The Pre Operative Assessment service determines the fitness of patients for anaesthesia before surgery and optimizes their health prior to admission if indicated.
Skills in medical clerking, heart and lung assessment, ECG recording and interpretation, and phlebotomy skills are advantageous. Training will be provided to help the successful candidate build on existing skills and knowledge. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential, as you will liaise regularly with the wider multidisciplinary teams. IT skills are also necessary.
Main duties of the job
* Assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate individualized patient care in partnership with patients, their carers, and the multidisciplinary team to meet physical, spiritual, and emotional needs.
* Formulate and deliver high-quality patient care independently, seeking guidance for actions outside standard protocols.
* Recognize changes in patient conditions requiring intervention and ensure timely referrals or escalation.
* Maintain patient safety at all times, record and report adverse events, and assist with investigations to promote shared learning.
* Record patient information accurately using electronic and written formats close to the point of care.
* Access and utilize clinical diagnostic information to inform decisions.
* Use decision support tools to ensure safe and effective care.
* Make timely referrals to multidisciplinary team members and external agencies for holistic patient care.
* Administer medicines following NMC standards and Trust policies.
Working for your organisation
We are a small, friendly team that provides training support to the successful candidate. You will work autonomously but with support from consultant anaesthetists and experienced staff.
The unit operates from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Cross-site working may be required, and a home working option is under development.
