Job overview

The ideal candidate must enjoy working in a busy environment; the applicant will preferably have experience working in a paediatric audiology department. You must be flexible and a team player with excellent interpersonal skills. Experience in using Microsoft office software, IT literate and numerate is essential. Ideally the candidate will be experienced in using Auditbase.

In view of the nature of the service, it is essential you are able to deal calmly with children, young people and families who may at times be feeling anxious or distressed.

The Audiology service is managed by Barts Health and we cover several districts in East London including: Tower Hamlets, City & Hackney, Newham and Waltham Forest. We provide a service at many health centers and hospitals including the Hackney Ark Health Centre, The Royal London Hospital, West Ham Lane Health Center, Loxford Polyclinic, Wood Street Health Center, St Bartholomew's as well as Homerton and Newham university general hospitals. Our team is made up of over 50 staff including Audiologists, audiovestibular physicians, newborn hearing screeners and clerical staff. We work closely with colleagues in ENT and children's services and provide a full range of diagnostic and rehabilitative services.

Although you will be mainly based at the Hackney Ark Health Centre and The Royal London Hospital, you may be asked to provide cover at other local sites within the wider Audiology service.

Main duties of the job


To perform behavioural as well as specialist diagnostic audiological procedures, and provide a comprehensive specialist hearing aid service to children, including determining care plans for individual patients, and involving carers and families as appropriate.

To support the day-to-day management of the joint Tower Hamlets and City and Hackney Paediatric service.

To participate in areas of clinical audit, research and clinical governance
for the Audiology service, which may include designing and completing audits within own field, participating in data collection for larger projects, and contributing to the development of evidence based protocols.

To plan and prioritise elements of own workload, within the framework of service delivery priorities as defined by the Clinical Lead and Head of Service, and supervise the work of other members of the team as appropriate, including junior audiologists, trainees and students.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. BSc Audiology OR BTEC qualification in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurement & successfully completed both parts of BAAT I and II (or equivalent)
2. Registered to practice as an Audiologist with the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP)
3. Theoretical and practical knowledge of Paediatric Audiology, and advanced Audiological test techniques An awareness of national Audiology and NHS Developments
4. Evidence of CPD

Desirable criteria

5. MSc in Audiological Science plus CAC/CCC Or Successful completion of the STP in Audiology
6. Eligible/registered as a clinical scientist with HCPC or on the voluntary register with RCCP
7. Advanced courses in Audiology
8. British Sign Language Qualifications
9. Deaf Awareness Qualifications
10. Membership with the BAA and/or BSA
11. Diploma/Post graduate Certificate in Management

Experience

Essential criteria

12. NHS experience within Paediatric Audiology, including behavioural assessment and rehabilitation

Desirable criteria

13. Responsibility for area(s) of speciality within Audiology and/or general administration
14. Demonstrable operational managerial responsibility
15. Experience of working at a senior level demonstrating clinical competency within relevant clinical area
16. Evidence and experience of leading change, demonstrating sustained improvements
17. Working towards post graduate qualifications

Knowledge

18. Theoretical and practical Knowledge of Paediatric Audiology, and advanced Audiological test techniques
19. Awareness of the safeguarding procedures in place to maintain the wellbeing and protection of vulnerable children
20. Thorough understanding of the concept and practical implications of clinical governance

Skills

Essential criteria

22. Ability to prioritise, innovate & work as part of a multidisciplinary Team
23. Practical skills in standard audiological behavioural clinical procedures in relation to children and young people
24. Clinical analytical skills in the interpretation of complex clinical audiological data
25. Physical skills, requiring precision, for the accurate insertion of intra-aural probes and taking highquality ear mould impressions
26. Knowledge of the fundamentals of normal child development
27. Knowledge of the causes and appropriate management of hearing impairment in children
28. Understanding of current approaches to hearing aid selection, verification and evaluation in children
29. Demonstrates understanding of issues surrounding hearing impairment and impact on quality of life for the whole family

Desirable criteria

30. An enquiring interest in Audiology
31. Knowledge of the scientific bases of clinical and electrophysiological procedures relevant to paediatric audiology
32. Experience in electrophysiological testing
33. Knowledge of the current NHS structure and developments
