1 Month Contract With A Local Authority
Job Purpose:
To undertake Best Interests Assessments under the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), ensuring that any deprivation of liberty is lawful, necessary, and in the best interests of individuals who lack capacity to consent to their care or treatment arrangements. The BIA will contribute to upholding the rights and freedoms of vulnerable adults in accordance with the Mental Capacity Act 2005, DoLS Code of Practice, and relevant case law.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
* Undertake Best Interests Assessments as part of the statutory DoLS assessment process, in accordance with the Mental Capacity Act and its Code of Practice.
* Assess and balance medical, social, psychological, and environmental information to determine the individual’s best interests.
* Consult with family members, carers, advocates, and other professionals involved in the person’s care to gather relevant information.
* Prepare high-quality, evidence-based reports and make clear recommendations regarding the authorisation or refusal of DoLS applications.
* Work closely with Mental Health Assessors and Supervisory Bodies (e.g., local authorities) to ensure coordinated assessments and timely decisions.
* Keep up to date with relevant legislation, policy, and case law, including the Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS) if implemented.
* Maintain accurate records and adhere to data protection, safeguarding, and professional conduct requirements.
Requirements
* Professional qualification and current registration.
* Accredited Best Interests Assessor qualification (BIA training from an approved university)
* In-depth knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, and associated guidance.
* Strong analytical, report writing, and decision-making skills.
* Ability to manage sensitive conversations and balance conflicting views in complex cases.
* Excellent organisational and time management skills, able to meet statutory deadlines.
* Full UK Driving License.
