Teaching Assistant – Pupil Referral Unit (PRU)

Job Purpose: As a Teaching Assistant in a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), you will support students who have been excluded from mainstream education. Your role involves providing academic and emotional support to students with behavioural, social, and emotional challenges, working closely with teachers and staff to foster a positive, inclusive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assist with delivering educational activities to small groups or individual students.
2. Adapt teaching materials to meet students' diverse needs, ensuring accessibility and engagement.
3. Help students with reading, writing, and numeracy tasks.
4. Support students in achieving their learning goals and improving academic progress.
5. Provide pastoral support, build positive relationships, and manage challenging behaviour.
6. Encourage positive behaviour and emotional regulation with staff support.
7. Build students’ confidence and self-esteem through emotional support and guidance.
8. Maintain a calm, productive classroom environment.
9. Assist with classroom routines and ensure student engagement.
10. Work with teachers to manage disruptive behaviour and resolve conflicts.
11. Collaborate with SENCOs and other professionals to monitor student progress and wellbeing.
12. Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
Requirements:
* Experience working with children or young people, especially those with behavioural or learning difficulties.
* Experience in a PRU, alternative education, or supporting students with additional needs is highly desirable.
* Strong communication skills and relationship-building ability.
* Patience, empathy, and effective behaviour management skills.
* Commitment to students’ emotional and academic development.
* Ability to work collaboratively and use initiative.
* Good organisational and time-management skills.
