Overview

Work as a Senior Health Care Assistant in Specialist Gynaecology Outpatients. Must have a positive attitude to Women’s Health.

Support care of and chaperone patients attending general and specialist outpatient diagnostic and treatment procedures. Assist and set-up of specialist clinics of invasive Gynaecological/Urogynaecological outpatient procedures such as Colposcopy, Outpatient Hysteroscopy, TWR clinics; trans-vaginal ultrasound, vulval dermatological treatments, Urodynamic investigations and flexible cystoscopy; and surgical treatments.

Carry out assigned tasks involving direct patient care in support of and supervised by a registered nurse. Flexible shift work, predominantly Mondays to Fridays to cover clinics, with some late afternoons and occasional Saturdays to cover service needs.


Responsibilities

* Provide a welcoming environment in the department.
* Demonstrate patient-first care; show kindness and respect at all times.
* Maintain high standards of compassionate and professional care with attention to privacy and dignity.
* Introduce yourself with name and designation to patients in clinic rooms, at reception and in waiting areas.
* Ensure waiting areas are clean, safe, and conducive at start of day, between patients, in clinics, and at end of day; ensure sufficient drinking cups.
* Identify patient identity and check in to department; record on Millennium Electronic Patient Records (EPR).
* Check patient condition as required; record temperature; follow current guidelines on admittance to department/clinics.
* Manage allocated clinic under non-direct supervision of the registered nurse.
* Ensure relevant patient notes, clinical forms, investigation results and other tests/procedures are accurate and available on patient arrival.
* Keep patients informed of waiting times; inform the nurse in charge if any problems arise.
* Carry out routine tests/screening prior to consultations (urine test, pregnancy test, weight/BMI, etc.).
* Be competent in using blood pressure and pulse measurement equipment and record findings.
* Maintain accurate records and ensure all documentation is completed (consent, accurate labelling of samples).
* Assist in effective management of patients during examinations, invasive procedures and treatments in Gynaecology Outpatient settings with regard to personal needs.
* Chaperone patients undergoing clinical procedures and treatments.
* Assist patients with personal care and hygiene as needed; utilise moving and handling aids to reduce risk of injury.
* Escort patients to other departments within the hospital.
* Undertake assigned tasks involving direct care as directed by the nurse in charge.
* Respect patients' rights, cultural beliefs, values and attitudes.
* Be aware of the Trust’s Standards of Practice and Care.
* Maintain mandatory updates on Information Governance, manual handling, fire and cardiac arrest procedures and other mandatory training.


Specialist Clinical Duties

* Set up specialist gynaecology/urogynaecology outpatient diagnostic and treatment clinics with attention to infection control, patient and equipment safety.
* Assist and support operator/clinician of specialist outpatient diagnostic and treatment clinics.
* Routine Diagnostic Flexible cystoscopy: assist specialist nurse/clinician with invasive surgical treatments (e.g., intra-detrusor Botulinum Toxin A injections and Bulkamid) under local anaesthetic.
* Urodynamic procedures; Outpatient Hysteroscopy (including Myosure); Colposcopy; TWR clinics & Transvaginal Scan; Specialist Nurse Clinics (e.g., vaginal pessary, TWOC/catheter care, vulval dermatology, smear, fertility, pelvic pain); General Gynaecology OP clinics.
* Understand potential complications/risks of procedures and processes for dealing with and reporting patient and equipment complications to the registered nurse/clinician.
* Identify patient needs following procedures; undertake venepuncture after training and competency.
* Provide reassurance to patients and advocate for them; ensure privacy and dignity at all times.
* Maintain confidentiality and comply with infection control policies, universal precautions, and hand hygiene.

Maintain good communication with patients prior to and throughout procedures. Verbal advice about procedures should be given by the registered nurse/specialist nurse; refer all questions to registered nurses/specialist nurses. At all times, assist trained nurses/specialist nurses in clinics that may be running concurrently. Answer the telephone in accordance with Trust standards and refer calls to the nurse in charge. Report complaints, incidents, concerns, or near misses to the nurse in charge and complete online Datix. Be aware of current hospital procedures on fire, cardiac arrest and manual handling; maintain patient confidentiality at all times.


Other Duties

* Maintain tidiness and cleanliness of all patient areas including clinics/treatment rooms, stores, sluice and waiting area.
* Check equipment daily and report faults; ensure clinic rooms are well stocked before clinics start.
* Take responsibility on a rotational basis for equipment maintenance and stock management, including annual service of equipment, six monthly smoke extractor filter changes, and ordering supplies using the current IT system/Oracle.
* Stock management: pathology stock swabs, cytology/histology/urine specimen pots; hand hygiene audits; other shared responsibilities as required.
* Photocopy and stock stationary; daily stock checks in clinics with consumables and instruments; order linen; store cleaned/sterilised instruments appropriately; ensure correct storage of instruments.
* Check expiry dates on consumables, stock, and sterilised packs; adhere to infection control policies and participate in clinical audits as required by the Trust Women’s Health and Quality Assurance Team.
* Undertake collection/removal of laundry and rubbish; movement of specimens to pathology; movement of health records.
* Embody safe working practices; protect vulnerable adults; adhere to Trust Code of Conduct; participate in mandatory training and NVQ or equivalent programs as required.
* Be smart in appearance and wear the correct uniform; display name and ID badge at all times.
