The Argyll Substations Project
The Argyll Substations Project offers a rare opportunity to be involved in the delivery of future‑critical energy infrastructure at the heart of Scotland’s transition to net zero. As part of Balfour Beatty’s work with SSEN Transmission, this programme involves the construction of new high‑voltage substations in challenging, remote environments, providing hands‑on exposure to complex civils, reinforced concrete, access works, and substation construction from the ground up.
With long‑term programme security, a strong safety and engineering culture, and clear progression opportunities across major power transmission projects, Argyll is an ideal role for engineers looking to work on meaningful infrastructure that will have a lasting national impact.
What you’ll be doing
Role Purpose
* Undertake site engineering control and implementation of works on site, including monitoring and reporting progress.
* The project involves significant heavy civil engineering such as earthworks, drainage, and roads.
Accountabilities
* Live the Balfour Beatty Values.
* Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm.
* Support the delivery of CSUK’s Sustainability activities.
Health, Safety & Environmental
* Produce Task Briefing Sheets.
* Contribute to production of Permit to Dig, including briefing to the workforce.
* Carry out briefings and toolbox talks.
* Conduct Safety Inspections.
* Identify hazards and contribute to developing Safe Systems of Work.
* Understand and use Permit to Work System.
* Demonstrate environmental awareness.
Engineering Control
* Set out from primary control provided by others.
* Provide sketches detailing the setting out information installed.
* Maintain survey equipment, including registers and testing regimes.
* Read and determine information from drawings, schedules, and specifications.
* Use setting out techniques and survey equipment.
* Report issues with control and information provided.
Quality
* Produce as‑built drawings and records for every element of the works involved.
* Complete Quality Check Sheets and produce information for Handover Documentation in line with programme.
* Maintain accurate records – Daily Diary, photographs, records of site discussions.
* Read and understand drawings and schedules.
* Understand Activity Control Plans and produce resultant information for handover file.
* Have a strong understanding of construction tolerances.
* Be aware of and use Specification and other Contract documents.
* Produce detailed documentation for handover of completed works.
Productivity
* Measure actual materials used and reconcile with theoretical measures, reporting and investigating reasons for differences.
* Work to Weekly Programme (drafted by others) and mark up progress achieved weekly.
* Contribute to collection of data for Key Performance Indicators, including reasons for difference.
* Take off and schedule material quantities accurately.
Commercial
* Produce accurate daily diary of resources, including labour, plant, materials, subcontractors, and outputs.
* Produce weekly measure, take‑offs, and schedule materials accurately, producing clear requisitions and following through to delivery.
* Understand what is classified as additional work and how to record this.
* Be familiar with actual resourcing levels versus budget and report reasons for differences.
* Have knowledge of specification and contract documents.
* Understand what constitutes additional works.
