Consultant Ophthalmology – Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus

Applications are invited for an Ophthalmology Consultant with a special interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The closing date is 18 January 2026.


About the Role

The successful candidate will join a team of six Consultant Ophthalmologists, five middle‑grade/training doctors, and allied health professionals. Experience in Paediatric ophthalmology, strabismus, retinopathy of prematurity ward rounds, and acute ophthalmic conditions is required. The role involves active participation in audit projects and development of nursing and allied health professionals in extended roles.

The eye department is a modern outpatient and day‑case surgery unit, situated within the hospital campus with onsite parking and nearby railway links. Fast trains from Milton Keynes Central to London Euston take under 40 minutes.


Main Duties

• Provide full clinical services in Ophthalmology, including paediatric and strabismus care.
• Participate in medical audit and continuous medical education.
• Support the delivery of the NHS Plan, booking of outpatient services and day‑surgery admissions.
• Attend clinical meetings, Royal College guideline meetings, and GP outreach activities.
• Deliver paediatric clinic sessions, paediatric theatre days, virtual clinics, and ROP ward rounds.
• Lead non‑core SPA activities, including educational supervision, audit lead, and ES supervision.
• Manage Core SPA duties (appraisal, revalidation, CME, routine departmental meetings).
• Provide teaching to undergraduate, postgraduate, and non‑medical staff, and support the weekly/monthly teaching programme.


Job Schedule

Maximum 10 sessions per week with the following breakdown:
• 2 paediatric clinics
• 1.5 theatre sessions (high‑flow cataract list, 1‑2 per month)
• 1 virtual clinic
• 1 ROP ward round
• 1.5 non‑core SPA (paediatric lead/audit lead/ES supervisor)
• 1 Core SPA
• 0.5 electronic triage
• 7.5:2.5 DCC/SPA split.

Person Specification


Education and Qualifications

* Full registration with the General Medical Council.
* Be on the GMC specialist register for Ophthalmology.
* FRCOphth or equivalent.
* Experience in retina sub‑specialty training (12+ months).
* Experience in Ophthalmic Primary Care / Eye Casualty.
* Clinical research experience.
* Up‑to‑date sub‑specialty fellowship (Retina).
* Experience in delivering a virtual retina service and NHS retina service.


Experience and Knowledge

* High level of clinical experience and competence in Ophthalmology.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for patient care.
* A commitment to developing and managing a Medical Retina Service.


Management & Administrative

* Ability to advise on efficient service running.
* Organise and manage workload efficiently.
* Experience of audit management.


Teaching

* Experience and commitment to teaching undergraduates, postgraduates, and non‑medical staff.
* Medical educational qualification.


Research, Audit and Clinical Governance

* Commitment to medical audit and research.
* Experience in Clinical Governance.
* Ability to supervise.
* Publications in peer‑reviewed journals.


Communication Skills and Abilities

* Approachable, effective team member with interpersonal skills.
* Empathetic and sensitive to patient needs.
* IT skills.


Continued Professional / Personal Development

* Evidence of lifelong learning.

Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annum pro rata.
