An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Paediatric Nurse to join our well-established Paediatric Plastics Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

We are seeking a children's nurse who demonstrates a high-level of autonomy and sound clinical skills, with significant plastic surgery experience to take on the unique role of complex wound and scar CNS.

You will act as an expert resource providing advice for healthcare professionals and must be competent to deliver health promotion and education to parents, their families and others.

Our ideal candidate will have foundational knowledge of research and audit processes to lead on the development of our nurse-led research portfolio.

Main duties of the job

As a clinical nurse specialist you will be an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team working together to deliver this specialist service, promoting treatment pathways that empower & support children and families to enable timely discharge from hospital and any follow up care required.

You will lead on developing and working within evidence-based specialist pathways of care, guidelines, protocols and patient group directives to support patients and their families in order to improve care delivery. You may be required to participate in reviews, incident management or safeguarding of patients.

The CNS role ensures that the child's experience is of the highest quality inspiring child, family and public confidence. This will be achieved through high visibility, accessibility and surveillance.

Prior experience in paediatric plastic surgery is essential and a foundational knowledge of research and audit is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will be well supported by the matron, the current clinical nurse specialists, the consultants and the rest of the multi-disciplinary team.

This post will form close links with the specialist network in our surrounding hospitals as well as other community services where our patients are discharged to.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

-Independently manage a group of patients within the specialty whilst
working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering specialised
individualised and personalised direct patient care
-Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
-Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication
including transfusion of blood and blood products
-Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in the
specialty. To interpret information and take appropriate action and to lead
others to do the same.
- Act as an advocate for patients within the department, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.
- Ensure that patients’ receive high quality clinical care and a good patient
experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and
doctrines.
-Recognise and avoid situations that may be detrimental to the health and
wellbeing of the individuals.
- To provide leadership, support and guidance to staff in monitoring the
planning delivery and evaluation of individualised specialist care.
- Is wholly accountable for his / her practice in line with the NMC code of
professional conduct and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain
and improve his / her knowledge and professional competence.
- Ensure safe and effective care for complex patients requiring advanced
specialist clinical skills and responsible for carrying out specialist nursing
procedures to area.
-To be responsible, for maintaining a safe environment for patients, visitors
and other staff within the clinical environment.
-Ensure that sensitive patient records are stored appropriately.
-Ensures the cultural and spiritual needs of patients are recognised and
accommodated within resources available.
-Support and enable patients and Carers to make informed decisions
relating to their treatment and management.
-Participate in case conferences in relation to the management of patients,
ensuring the coordination of ongoing care.
-Ensure staff take precautions to minimise the risk of cross infection in
relation to the safe disposal of body fluids (including blood).
-A key member of the multidisciplinary team in supporting patients and their
carers during the delivery of bad news such as caring for the terminally ill
patients and the event of death.
- Assess educational and information needs for patients and families, and
devise plans to ensure need are met.
-To be an effective communicator with patients/carers/families regarding
disease treatment and management.
-Promote high quality clinical care, and assist in the development of the
specialist service, through the use of evidence based practice and clinical
standards
- Provide a seamless, high quality service from referral through to
assessment, diagnosis, treatment and review.

Skills

Essential criteria

1. Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients/clients and give relevant advice/information to patients and relatives.
2. Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues.
3. Evidence of teaching skills, in particular teaching patients/carers and other health professionals on how to manage wounds
4. Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal & communication skills

Education/Qualification

Essential criteria

5. Registered Children's Nurse
6. BSC/1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification/training and experience
7. Leadership Course
8. Post registration qualification in appropriate area of speciality or equivalent post qualification experience

Desirable criteria

9. To have or working towards a masters degree
10. To have or working towards a non medical physical assessment course

Essential criteria

11. Extensive experience of working autonomously at an advanced level within the specialist area delivering effective patient focused care.
12. Proven evidence of management and leadership skills and autonomous practice
13. Experience of audit, research & evidence based care
