What you’ll need
* Strong proficiency in Java and COBOL, including legacy system integration.
* Leadership and mentoring – ability to manage and guide development teams and foster a high‑performing culture.
* Agile delivery and problem‑solving – working within multidisciplinary agile teams, handling time‑critical incidents, and delivering innovative, user‑focused solutions.
* Effective communication and collaboration – explaining technical decisions to varied audiences and working closely with architects, stakeholders, and delivery managers.
Responsibilities
* Lead the delivery of high‑impact software projects that support millions of users across the UK.
* Design, build, and maintain applications, ensuring they meet user needs and government standards.
* Hands‑on problem solving and driving continuous improvement.
* Manage development workflows using tools like Jira, coordinating tasks and monitoring progress.
* Participate in critical incident support and legacy system transformation.
* Mentor engineers, engage with stakeholders, and contribute to architectural decisions.

* Location: one of our digital hubs in Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle‑upon‑Tyne, and Sheffield – choose the most convenient for you.
* Hybrid working model – spend 40 % of your time working from home and 60 % collaborating face‑to‑face in a hub.
* Pay: up to £78,517.
* Pension: civil service pension with employer contributions worth 28.97 % (up to £19,758 per year).
* Holiday: 26 days rising to 31 days over time, plus up to 3 extra days off a month on flexi‑time, and all public holidays.
