Senior Backend Developer
The role of Senior Backend Developer is very important to us. We are looking for someone who has proven expertise with TypeScript and NodeJS to join the talented development team in our vehicle telematics business, Radius Telematics. We need a leader-by-example who can balance technical excellence with pragmatic execution, ensuring our product evolves while meeting the demands of today's challenges.
Specifically, you will play a key role in developing and running a complex multi‑environment SaaS product comprising 70+ git repos using a modern microservice backend built in TypeScript, NodeJS, Docker on AWS and automated CI/CD pipelines released onto Terraform‑provisioned infrastructure. Telematics is a big growth area for Radius, so there will be plenty of opportunity to keep your skills up to date and progress your career.
We embrace an Agile way of working, but we know success also requires grit, ownership, and a willingness to step beyond conventional roles. In‑person collaboration is very important to us. You will need to be able to work from our telematics head office in Crewe, Cheshire for a minimum 3 days per week. The onsite facilities are excellent, including café, barista counter, pizzeria, rooftop bar and multiple breakout areas.
Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
* Design, build, and maintain scalable and secure backend systems using Node.js and TypeScript.
* Work closely within a cross‑functional team and the wider team, focusing on collaboration to achieve desired outcomes.
* Lead by example, stepping in to guide the team through challenging situations with persistence and creative problem‑solving.
* Support and mentor junior developers, sharing expertise and fostering a culture of growth and excellence.
* Take initiative to tackle critical challenges during high‑stakes situations.
Experience and Qualifications
What do we expect from you?
* Significant commercial experience as a backend developer, with knowledge gained across our tech stack: NodeJS, TypeScript, Mocha, Sinon, Terraform, Git, GitLab CI/CD, Docker, AWS (ECS, EC2, Kinesis, Firehose, RDS, Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, SQS, SNS).
* Experience with databases – Postgres and MySQL.
* Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
* Ability to take ownership of projects from design to implementation.
* Active contribution to Agile events, inspecting and adapting ways of working, and providing solutions to keep development on track.
* Proactive: you don't wait for direction; you identify what needs to be done and take action.
* Resilient: challenges energise you.
* A driver: you push the product and team forward with determination and a solutions‑first mindset.
* Collaborative yet assertive: you work well in teams but know when to stand your ground and advocate for the right approach.
