We have an exciting development opportunity available to cover maternity leave for a nurse looking for their next clinical leadership position. Working in collaboration with the gynaecology ward manager, you will lead our gynaecology and early pregnancy assessment service at the Royal Preston Hospital. The unit is an emergency service operating in a model similar to that of a same day emergency care service for patients with urgent and emergency gynaecological condition or early pregnancy related concern. The unit has had its busiest year to date, with 10,000 attendances and over 1,000 recorded early pregnancy losses.
This post is a critical role to our senior nursing leadership team, required to champion the care needs of women, their partners and of course our workforce. You will champion high quality standards of care through continuous improvement to continue to drive innovation and change.
You will work closely with the gynae ward manager. The Ward accommodates a diverse mixture of surgical and emergency patients within the 18 bedded area, offering a specialist service for Gynaecology Oncology, Urogynaecology and Endometriosis patients alongside our early pregnancy patients, caring for those experiencing early pregnancy loss and miscarriage.
Main duties of the job
You will have excellent communication & organisational skills, be passionate & strive to make a difference. You will be responsible for overseeing the provision of high quality care that is safe, efficient, effective, kind and meets the individual needs of women and their partners using our services. Together with the wider Gynaecology team you will be leading the service to uphold the Trust Values. You will have overall responsibility for the provision of excellent care with compassion for the patients, relative and visitors who are cared for within their ward or department or by their team.
Working closely with the Matron and lead consultant for the service, you will maintain a focus on the promotion of a close working relationship with the MDT team to uphold our standards and our mission to deliver excellent care with compassion, every time. You will deputise on behalf of the matron where appropriate to ensure consistent and safe care is delivered at all times to our patients whilst leading our amazing nursing and wider MDT teams. You will have strong leadership skills in order to lead a diverse team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To ensure the provision of excellent care with compassion the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse/Ward Manager is responsible for:
1. ensuring all patient experience concerns are responded to in a timely manner
2. adopt continuous improvement methodology to bring about sustained change and improvements for staff and patients
3. ensure clinical audit and action planning is undertaken to receive assurance on care standards and delivery
4. Ensure the department is able to meet the requirements of the STAR nursing accreditation framework to attain and maintain gold STAR status and actions are completed timely.
5. to work clinically 40% of the week
6. ensure all staff are appraised and are compliant with training requirements for role in line with Trust policy and standards and provide assurance that staff are trained and equipped to carry out their roles competently and safely, utilising performance management processes where required.
7. Ensure sickness absence is managed in accordance with Trust policy
8. Ensure incidents and risk are managed through the Trust PSIRF policy and plan, using the incident and risk management system effectively
9. work closely with the wider MDT in relation to providing expert care to our patients
10. Ensure patient information is of a high standard and updated regularly
11. Participate in developing policy, procedure and guidelines relevant to the area
12. Contribute to the speciality clinical governance and risk agenda
13. Lead the always safety first / harm free care / safeguarding agenda within the clinical area
14. ensuring that the nursing team and care support team within their ward or department are adequately resourced and organised.
15. ensuring the nursing team and care support team are adequately supported and developed to deliver excellent care with compassion in line with the Trust’s Values & Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework.
16. Leading and developing the ward nursing team and the ward administration and support teams by being a visible and strong role model providing leadership and direction to the team, capitalising on research and development opportunities, providing clinical supervision and advice for staff and students in order to support them in reaching their full potential
17. Ensuring the productive operation of the ward through the monitoring and maintenance of standards that create a safe, clean and organised environment and by using processes designed to increase the time nurses spend in therapeutic contact with patients

Essential criteria
18. Appropriate NMC Registration
19. Mentorship qualification
20. Post registration qualification relevant to role
21. Degree in nursing
22. Evidence of relevant up to date continuous professional development
23. Successful completion of are ongoing participation in a leadership development programme
Desirable criteria
24. Level 4 ILM or equivalent qualification
25. Post graduate qualification in gynaecology or infertility
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
26. Able to perform clinical duties commensurate to that of the role e.g. IV medication, venepuncture, performing ECG
27. Evidence of the ability to implement changes within nursing practice
28. Knowledge of clinical governance and safeguarding and the relevance of these to practice
29. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
30. Evidence of clinical competence in areas of speciality
31. Evidence of experience of leading and managing others
