Locum Consultant in Acute Medicine

University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW)

12 month fixed term locum position for maternity cover

Acute Medicine is an essential pillar of urgent care at UHBW. We have ambitious plans to grow the service at Weston General Hospital with the expansion of our Acute Medical Unit, Same Day Emergency Care Unit, and optimising clinical pathways. You will have a unique opportunity to lead and shape the future of the service, working within an enthusiastic, collaborative multi‑disciplinary team committed to driving forward the Trust vision for Acute Medicine.


Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership and direction for the multi‑professional team in the management of acute medical patients. Responsibilities include leading ward rounds, directing patient management, performing practical procedures, teaching junior staff, attending multidisciplinary meetings, participating in governance activity, managing service administration, and liaising with other professionals both within and outside the Trust as required.

Job responsibilities

Acute Medicine is comprised of the following:

* 28 inpatient bedded Acute Medical Unit on Sandford Ward. Clinical leadership is provided by two consultants on the ward from 09:00‑17:00 to complete ward rounds, oversee new admissions and manage referrals.
* Same Day Emergency Unit runs 7 days a week 08:00 to 22:00 alongside the Emergency Department. The Acute Medicine Consultant is present from 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays to facilitate rapid and early senior review of patients. The team runs a HOT/Bring‑back clinic within SDEC.
* Waterside, 16 bedded General Medicine Ward. Ward rounds take place 2‑3 times a week with daily board round support.
* Acute Medicine provides leadership of the Acute Medical Take with Acute Medicine consultant leading from 09:00‑17:00 on weekdays based within the Emergency Department.
* GIM On‑Call element on a 1:11 ratio. This would be on site from 17:00‑19:00 post new admissions and non‑resident until 08:00.


Person Specification


Qualifications & Training

* MRCP / FRCP / MBBS (or equivalent)
* Fully registered with the GMC.
* Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Acute or General Medicine or within six months of award of CCT by date of interview (for permanent post).
* Teaching or training qualifications.


Experience

* Experience of leading acute admitting medical team.
* Experience of working with allied professions.
* Experience of audit in acute or general medicine.
* Experience of teaching both post and undergraduate students and professions allied to medicine.
* Experience of educating support staff.


Clinical Knowledge and Skills

* Ability to take on full & independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
* Skills in teaching under & post graduate students.
* Knowledge of research techniques in clinical medicine.
* Knowledge of the use of patient databases and IT websites.


Clinical Governance and Audit

* Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies.
* Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation.
* Positive approach to evidence‑based practice.
* Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation.


Research

* Knowledge of the principles involved in research.
* Evidence of involvement in research.
* Evidence of peer review research papers.
* Ability to increase the academic profile of the department.


Teaching and Training

* Experience of teaching medical students.
* Experience of supervising trainees.
* Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team.
* Formal teaching qualification.
* Evidence of management training and evidence of learning from it.
* Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a specialist service.
* Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a consultant.
* Ability to practise independently as a consultant.
* Ability to take on responsibility and show evidence of leadership.
* Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks.
* Demonstration of knowledge of NHS management structures.


Interpersonal, communication and team working skills

* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues, support staff and other colleagues.
* Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English.
* Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries.
* Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi‑professional basis with all levels of staff both within and across divisions.
* Ability to be a flexible team member.
