This role plays a key role in delivering safe, effective, and patient centred aseptic pharmacy services at University Hospital Southampton. This role supports the smooth running of daily operations ensuring a high-quality service is provided. As an experienced and accredited technician, you will also lead on the coordination of workload, allocating tasks, mentoring junior staff, and supporting training. You will contribute to service development through identifying improvements, updating and implementing Standard Operating Procedures.

Working closely with an experienced team of Pharmacists, Technicians and Support Workers you will be responsible for reporting operational issues, escalating concerns appropriately, and acting as a role model for professional standards and Trust values.

Responsibilities

* Supervise and coordinate the day to day work within the aseptic unit ensuring tasks are allocated effectively to meet service demands.
* Ensure the safe preparation and supply of aseptic products by maintaining GMP standards, adhering to cleanroom procedures and performing accuracy checks.
* Act as a role model and mentor by training, supporting junior staff, and contributing to recruitment and induction processes.


What Experience/Skills Are Needed

* Registered Pharmacy Technician or Science Manufacturing Technician with accredited accuracy checking qualification.
* Demonstrable experience in supervising or supporting junior staff, with strong communication skills to provide guidance, feedback and training.
* Ability to manage workload and problem solve while maintaining high professional standards.
* Strong teamwork skills are essential, alongside effective communication and a high level of attention to detail.


Qualifications / Training Required


Essential criteria

* Registered pharmacy technician in UK by GPhC / registered Science Manufacturing Technician (Apprenticeship Standard- Level 3 Diploma in the Principles of Aseptic Pharmaceuticals processing) in UK by the Science Council.
* Numerate and literate e.g. GCSE in Maths and English A* to C or equivalent or IELTS test score 7 as required by GPhC if overseas candidate.
* One of the following additional pharmacy qualifications – Accredited Checking PT (ACPT) Pre and In Processing Checking (PIPC) medicine management accreditation, TAQA assessor, CIPS level 4, foundation management or equivalent demonstrable experience of day to day operational management of staff and workload.
* Experience of staff management/operational workload supervision.


Desirable criteria

* Completion of Practice supervisor programme or equivalent.
* Additional pharmacy qualifications e.g. Completed APTUK Foundation Framework Foundation management or other recognised management qualification or demonstrable management experience TAQA Medicines Management qualification PIPC ACPT CIPS level 4.


Previous or relevant experience necessary


Essential criteria

* Accurate dispensing of medicines (in hospital or community pharmacy or aseptics).
* Maintaining continuous professional development portfolio.
* Dealing with customers/patients.


Desirable criteria

* Hospital pharmacy experience.
* Stock control/ordering experience.
* Experience of JAC or similar computer labelling/ordering system.
* Experience relevant to role applied for e.g.: Providing a ward based medicines management service, Clinical Trials or research experience, Aseptic services experience.


Skills


Essential criteria

* Communicate effectively with others both in speaking and in writing.
* Good team worker.
* Attention to detail and accurate in work e.g. dispensing, calculations.
* Able to use a range information technology programmes effectively including Pharmacy Computer system and Microsoft office programmes.
* Able to use initiative, but know their own limitations and professional boundaries.
* Demonstrate times when able to work effectively under pressure.
* Tactful and show empathy.
* Demonstrates being able to organise their and others workload and prioritise effectively.
* Effectively work as part of a team.
* Experience of supervision of staff or trainees.
