To work as a full member of the primary health care general practitioner team, providing a full range of personal medical services to patients and contributing to the development of the practice.
Core responsibilities
* Provide medical services as defined in the core GMS contract and additional enhanced services where appropriate.
* Offer personal medical services to meet identified patient needs.
* Make professional, autonomous decisions regarding presenting problems, whether self‑referred or referred from other healthcare services within the organisation.
* Assess the healthcare needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems.
* Screen patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.
* Develop care plans for health in consultation with patients, following current practice protocols; provide counselling and health education.
* Prescribe within current ICB policy and NICE guidance, ensuring safe and effective medication management.
* Maximise the effective use of current clinical computer systems, recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to an agreed standard.
* Compile and issue computer‑generated acute and repeat prescriptions, avoiding handwritten prescriptions whenever possible.
* Participate in health research, clinical auditing and data collection to support quality improvement.
* Contribute to QOF requirements and record data appropriately.
* Attend team meetings and other clinical meetings as necessary.
* Ensure compliance with relevant organisation policies and procedures (prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety, infection control).
Service development
* Involve in developing primary care services to meet population needs.
* Collaborate closely with the practice team to achieve access targets.
* Support immunisation and health inequalities targets defined within the GMS contract.
* Advocate for health promotion work to empower the practice population to make informed choices.
* Represent the practice at appropriate meetings such as Practice Based Commissioning Groups.
Quality and continuous improvement
* Identify and address quality and risk issues, taking accountability for own actions.
* Contribute to audit, clinical standards setting and computer‑based record development.
* Manage own time, workload and resources effectively, within prescribing budget limits and incentive scheme targets.
Health and safety
* Promote and maintain personal and others’ health, safety and security as per organisational policy.
* Adhere to infection prevention and control guidance and participate in infection prevention programmes.
Personal and professional development
* Maintain continued education through courses, study days and training programmes.
* Engage in annual performance reviews and GMC revalidation procedures.
* Keep mandatory training up to date (Basic Life Support, Safeguarding Adults and Children).
Qualifications and experience
* Full GMC registration (MBChB or equivalent).
* MRCGP, DRCOG, DFFP or equivalent qualifications.
* Experience with EMIS Web and other GP clinical systems.
* Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Understanding of teamwork in delivering quality care.
* Decisive, confident working style with ability to handle competing priorities.
* Satisfactory DBS check.
