Offer description

To provide resident cover for anaesthetic and Critical care in office hours; as well as shifts of cover with non-resident supervision by a Consultant Intensivist and Anaesthetist out of hours. Additionally he/she/them will provide anaesthesia during daytime hours for the surgical and interventional specialties within the Trust, again with indirect (onsite) supervision from Consultants. There will be opportunities for career development which the department will support.

The department is able to accommodate different levels of experience; however newly appointed post holders will be expected to at least provide overnight Intensive Care cover, including airway skills.

Undertake advanced clinical assessment of the patient, analysing patient history, examination and investigation results to diagnose medical/surgical conditions and initiating treatment.

Works autonomously in recognised situations.

Use professional judgement in managing complex care events and captures the learning from these experiences to improve patient care and service delivery

To develop effective communication with the patient, relatives and MDT where required

Use advanced communication skills to impart sensitive, complex and potentially distressing information to patients and carers, provide them with details of additional agencies available for emotional support in hospital or upon discharge as appropriate.

To provide effective clinical handovers across all professional boundaries

Make and receive patient referrals to/from other medical specialities, or agencies, ensuring accurate written and verbal communication

Solo transfers of patients both intra and inter hospital where applicable

Documents in medical notes, history, clinical findings, physical examination, interpretation and plan of care.

Undertakes daily reviews of critical care patients and formulates and discusses plans on Consultant ward rounds.

To actively support the discharge planning of patients and communicates with the receiving area/team discharge in collaboration with the healthcare team.

Recognises own limitations and effectively seeks appropriate help

The base timetable is based around a Specialty grade 10 PA contract.

The successful candidate will provide some daytime and out of hours anaesthetic and critical care services. In addition, they will provide anaesthesia within theatres such that the total hours worked falls within their contract.

The exact nature of the duties will be formalised after discussion with the successful applicant.

All non-trainee staff are required to have a job plan setting out their main duties and responsibilities, including a work programme specifying their weekly timetable.

Specialties covered at RBH include: elective orthopaedics, colorectal, urology, upper GI, vascular, breast, endocrine, gynaecology, interventional cardiology, interventional radiology and endoscopy. Obstetrics, head and neck, trauma and paediatrics are all based at Poole Hospital.

The actual job plan of the successful candidate(s) will be based on the needs of the directorate and the skills/experience/clinical interests of the applicants.

The post holder is expected to participate in the Directorate's half day Clinical Governance meetings (6 per annum) maintain their own skills and competencies through Continual Professional Development (CPD), participate in Clinical Audit and Effectiveness work and Research and Development, as appropriate.
