Job Summary

The post-holder will lead on the orthoptic-led neuro-ophthalmology service in conjunction with the Consultant Neuro-ophthalmologist and Consultant Neurologist. This includes the Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) clinic. They will also lead on the Adults with learning disabilities (ALD) clinic.

The post holder will co-ordinate the orthoptic assessment and virtual review of orthoptic-led patients under the care of the neuro-ophthalmology service alongside the wider multidisciplinary team (such as neurology, endocrinology, AHP groups and so on).

As the lead for the ALD service, the postholder will coordinate multidisciplinary ophthalmology assessments. This will include working closely with optometrists and organising examinations under anaesthesia (EUA) in collaboration with the dental team.

The post-holder will be expected to produce regular audits, quality improvement projects and service evaluation for orthoptic-led neuro-ophthalmology clinics (including IIH) and the ALD service.

As part of general Orthoptic duties the post-holder will work as an autonomous practitioner to assess, diagnose and manage patients referred to the Orthoptic, Paediatric and Neuro-ophthalmology services. The Orthoptic department is a highly specialised department that provides comprehensive, quality and specialised Orthoptic services as part of the multi-disciplinary Ophthalmology Team.

Main duties of the job

To lead on the orthoptic-led neuro-ophthalmology service in conjunction with the Consultant Neuro-ophthalmologist and Consultant Neurologist. This includes the Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) clinic.

Lead on the Adults with learning disabilities (ALD) clinic.

Co-ordinate the orthoptic assessment and virtual review of orthoptic-led patients under the care of the neuro-ophthalmology service alongside the wider multidisciplinary team (such as neurology, endocrinology, AHP groups and so on).

To produce regular audits, quality improvement projects and service evaluation for orthoptic-led neuro-ophthalmology clinics (including IIH) and the ALD service

Review guidelines, protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for orthoptic-led neuro-ophthalmology service (including IIH) and ALD service, in conjunction with the lead consultants for those services.

Work as an autonomous practitioner to assess, diagnose and manage any patient referred to the Orthoptic Department.

Participate in educational activities ran by and for the Orthoptic Department. This includes the teaching of pre-registration optometrists, medical undergraduates, junior doctors and other health care professionals, in addition to the teaching of undergraduate orthoptic students.

Possession of a Bachelor of Science in Orthoptics BSc (Orth), BMedSci (Orthoptics) and/or a diploma from the British Orthoptic Council
