Overview
As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer for Hybrid Cloud Services, you will model infrastructure solutions that adhere to best practice, focusing on operational stability, resilience and availability. This position collaborates with architects, site reliability engineers, delivery managers and product managers to support the implementation and operation of cloud‑hosted products and services. We ensure alignment with the Department's Technical Reference Architecture (TRA) and Security and Compliance Standards throughout all stages of development and delivery. Responsibilities
* Support the design and implementation of public cloud infrastructure services and solutions to meet strategic plans and roadmaps.
* Responsible for operational management of public cloud hosted technologies, products and services, with a focus on security, availability, resilience and performance.
* Provide specialist service or solution technical support and assistance to junior staff and users and undertake line management responsibilities.
* Develop and implement service improvement plans to address identified issues for public cloud hosted technologies, products and services.
* Manage and resolve incidents for public cloud hosted technologies, products and services.
Candidate Profile
Candidate profile: When completing your employment history and personal statement, ensure you clearly demonstrate your significant experience in relation to the essential criteria outlined below.
* Lead Criterion – managing and deploying applications to managed Kubernetes platforms such as EKS and AKS.
* Cloud compute, storage and configuration, ensuring solutions are repeatable, scalable, resilient and highly available.
* Use and administration of source code management systems such as GitLab, including writing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
* Write Infrastructure‑as‑Code (IaC) using Terraform, and write Config‑as‑Code (CaC) using Ansible. CloudFormation is desirable.
* Identify and automate toil where appropriate, to improve efficiency, increase reliability and reduce repetitive manual tasks.
* Work within Service and Delivery management frameworks (ITIL – Incident, Problem, Change – and Agile methodologies).
* Influential with strong communication and leadership skills.
Location
For candidates requesting to work in Newcastle, the role will initially be based at Benton Park View. It will then move to 1 Pilgrim Place in Newcastle city centre by the end of 2027.

We are leading the adoption of public cloud services in line with Government Digital Service guidance and DWP strategic hosting principles. The Hybrid Cloud Services team designs, builds and runs all hosting infrastructure across both public cloud and on‑premises environments. We work closely with product and service owners to support their transition to cloud‑based services. Our strategy is to deliver a Digital by Default approach by providing an end‑to‑end multi‑cloud hosting service for our Product Development Units. This means offering a securely connected hosting environment that reduces the reliance on traditional hosting models and legacy contracts. To achieve this, we are focusing on standardisation, simplification and automation. We are also developing the processes, training and tools needed to accelerate delivery and ensure our teams have everything required to succeed.
