The role
Your research and teaching will focus on political geographies of the Middle East, and will complement and extend our existing research and teaching strengths in political geographies at Newcastle University. Your research will be recognised internationally within your field, and you will be an excellent teacher at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels in Geography. We welcome applicants whose work advances one or more of the following areas through a focus on the Middle East and its shifting political geographies: conflict and displacement; resource colonialism; mobility politics; war and terrorism; human rights; security; borders and boundaries.
This position is fixed term for four years (48 months) only and has been created following the award of a four year Future Leaders Fellowship to Dr Craig Jones in Geography, School of GPS.

Key accountabilities
The successful applicant will be expected to:
1. Conduct and publish internationally recognised research in the sub-disciplinary area of political geographies
2. Contribute to our future submissions to the UK’s Research Excellence Framework (REF)
3. Apply for external research funding, including collaborative applications with colleagues within Newcastle University or beyond
4. Engage with potential non-academic users and beneficiaries of your research
5. Participate in our research clusters, particularly Power Space Politics
6. Contribute to, develop and extend teaching across our undergraduate and taught postgraduate Geography degree programmes
7. Become involved with postgraduate research student supervision when opportunities arise
8. Contribute to the administration of the Geography degree programmes and/or administration of other activities in Geography and the School of GPS
9. Provide academic guidance and pastoral support to personal tutees
10. Work in a collegial way, making a positive contribution to our collaborative and inclusive environment in which we value and support excellent research, teaching and impact
11. Take responsibility for your professional and career development with the support and encouragement of your colleagues

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
12. A track record, commensurate with career stage, of published research within political geographies of the Middle East
13. Research skills based on strong knowledge and understanding of a range of research methods, data sources, analytic techniques and methodologies
14. Experience of applying for research funding
15. Experience of engagement with non-academic research users and beneficiaries
16. Excellent teaching skills, including experience of teaching at Geography undergraduate level in political geographies of the Middle East
17. Excellent knowledge of core teaching requirements in human geography undergraduate programmes, including ability to teach research methodologies in Geography
18. Experience of lecturing, seminar teaching, assessment, field courses and dissertation supervision
19. Experience of providing academic guidance and pastoral care to undergraduate students
